I was driving my car on the freeway the other day, and white smoke started coming out in giant quantities out of the tail pipe. I was having a lag in acceleration when I put my foot on gas peddle and an egg like smell. By the time I got to the gas station to check the oil and everything, it turned to a little bit of a burning smell. The oil level was very low on the stick and put 3 quarts in there. I brought it to the machanic, knowing that it might be a head gasket.
They are saying that sometimes a head gasket blows and can damage the engine. A cylider broken or something like that. They say I need a new engine with parts and labor 5-6K.
Anyone have any thoughts?

3 quarts of oil is probably over half the total capacity.
My 850 takes something like 5.6, and that's with an extra turbo oil reservior, and it's a bigger engine.
So yes, unfortunately I have to agree that your car needing a new engine is entirely plausible.

i would guess that your head gasket has failed and that your loosing coolent into the cylinder bore. & so basically your pumping radiator fluid out of the exhaust.
only taking of the head will reveal if youve damaged your engine,
i would think it would be unlikely that youve done any lasting damage to the engine unless yuve cranked it when one of the cylinders was full of water.
the white smoke would have basicaly been water vapour,
take it to another garrage for a second opinion

Do you think I can save money by finding a rebuilt or used engine -- or is the labor the giant share of this?
Thanks!
Thanks!

They mentioned that they thought the cylinder was bent or brocken. Thinking and knowing, I guess are two different things.
