Turbo Problem?

Post by plevine1 »

First let me say I am a dope when it comes to auto mechanics.
I have a 2001 S40 Turbo with 92000 miles. For the most part the car runs great with the exception that I do and have had an oil leak problem. A few months ago I noticed white smoke from the exhaust during acceleration when on the parkway. The white smoke doesn’t appear during startup, normal idle or when driving locally. At first I thought it might be head gaskets. I brought it to a service station who told me the problem was the Turbo.
So first question is does this sound correct.
How much should I expect to pay to replace the Turbo and is it money well spent. I am currently unemployed so this comes at a very bad time.
I understand there are 2 type of Turbo’s which can be used, is this correct.

Thanks

A dealer will give you the correct turbo model number based on the VIN My S70 uses volvo #8601692 which is a LPT which is TDO4HL-13T

You can have your mechanic remove your current turbo and then you can send it out to have it rebuilt. Contact http://www.gpopshop.com/. On my S80, I removed the turbo (one of two) myself, bought a seal and bearing kit from Gpopshop for about $110, also had them balance the shaft with the compressor and turbine wheel attached. After all was said and done, I spent about $200 to rebuild it (again, I did all the work myself). Gpopshop will also rebuild your turbo for you and warranty it if they do the rebuild (A little more expensive, but it's a lot cheaper than a new turbo).
