2002 s40 intermittently won't start, tried everything!

Post by davidtalbert » Tue Aug 09, 2016 6:29 pm

Sometimes it starts right up, but usually I have to crank and crank then it may or may not start.
I does turn over, but acts like and old car with choke problems or out of fuel. It's a turbo, automatic with 136000 miles.
Here is what I have replaced:
Fuel pressure regulator
Idle air control valve (IAC)
coil packs (volvo oem)
ignition wires (volvo oem)
spark plugs (volvo oem)
cleaned throttle body
fuel injectors, all four
o2 sensors (both)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

May be the MAF sensor?
Unplug it and see if there is any improvement in starting and engine running whilst disconnected.

I unplugged it and tried to start, cranks but no start. Plugged it back in, same thing no start.

Try "cleaning" the PNP switch contacts by rowing the gearshift back and forth 20 times - WITH THE ENGINE OFF.
Since it's turning over I'm doubtful, but it won't hurt.

Did you ever check the fuel pressure with a gauge?
It should be around 44 psi.

No I haven't checked fuel pressure. I will have to get a gauge and check it. Are you saying it should be 44 psi with the key turned on? Not cranking it over...

Check around the engine bay for any loose,damaged or disconnected vacuum hoses.
One may have been acciddently disturbed when you were replacing one of the components on your list above.
Given you have replaced the fuel pressure regulator one wonders if the problem could be the fuel pump or even the fuel filter.
How does the air filter look? Clean or dirty?

IIRC, it should be around 44 psi at all times whenever the pump is running.
Regardless, I would check...
1. Key on, not running;
2. While cranking;
3. While running.
