Broken timing belt 2003 V40
I know this has been discussed previously, but I cannot find a discussion that details how to remove the valves to check if they are bent. The timing belt broke on my son's 2003 V40. The Haynes manual does not provide a way of removing the valves to check if they need replacing. Can someone help me find a way of doing this? Thanks

Not sure how you're thinking of checking the valves, but I can't think of any way of doing it without removing the head.
However, I would think doing a compression test will let you know.
But the problem with that is that you will have to have a new timing belt installed to perform the compression test.
Head removal isn't the hardest job to perform on the car, but it is a somewhat drawn out process.
And replacing the timing belt to just check what you already think is broken is tedious too.
Good luck with your decision.

Haynes has a manual for the first generation S40.
I used it when I did the camshaft gear replacement and found it helpful.
Other internet searching and basic automobile knowledge helped too.
Haynes is probably not the best regarding details, but it's the only one out there that I could find.

cylinder leak down test, you can use a compression gauge in the spark plug hole for each cylinder and then do the leak down test on any offending cylinder if any. Though the head will be coming off regardless if you find a cylinder with no compression the leakdown will give you more clues on what is causing the compression loss whether it is head gasket, rings or valves. Like I said it will be coming off if you find one with no compression. If you dont have a leakdown tester tool just take a compression tester, remove the schrader valve from it and install it with the shop air connected where the gauge was and it will blow air into engine, listen to where its coming out and youll know if its valves, rings or gasket.

and you'll have to rotate the cams by hand (since the timing belt is broken) to get the valves closed.
Also, make sure no piston is at TDC when rotating the cams.
