Next steps are evaluation of fuel pressure at rail, while we still have the poor running condition present.

Hi All. Thanks for all the knowledge and advice. I sure have a long homework list!
I will fill you in shortly about all the steps I have taken so far, and what the results were, so we can hopefully eliminate some possibilities.
Be back very soon with results and I really appreciate all the time you have given.
Also...my dogs are getting increasingly concerned that their favorite ride has not taken them anywhere in awhile!
Elisa.

Hello all. So here it is...
After going through the suggestions posted on here that we could handle ourselves, we brought it to a highly recommended Volvo shop that determined that we do indeed have a blown head gasket. My fuel pump module is also failing and the coils are at the end of their life span, and I am sure their are a host of other smaller problems but obviously the head gasket takes the cake.
So...not good. We are well aware of our limits, and I think the scope of this work, in my case, is best left to the pros. All said and done, we are realistically looking at at least $3000 (if the block is not cracked that is). With 180k, even though the body is in excellent condition, I am thinking this is not the wisest endeavor to pursue.
With the possibility of it being this worst case scenario, I have been hunting around for our newest Volvo incarnation. I will not be deterred! This is probably best left for a new thread but how serious is a Transfer Case leak on a 2000 XC70 with 109k? Priced to move! My husband thinks I'm crazy but I do tend to adopt the troubled cases.
Thanks for all the help. Volvo Love!

Thanks for update. I do have a spare used PEM for test purposes that I think will fit.
Im still skeptical of HG diagnosis with even compression numbers and smooth idle.
