2004 XC70 occasional shudder under part throttle

Well my wife says she felt it again. We got a good 2 weeks out of it. I pulled it from the driver list and it will sit until I have time to take it apart again and go for the fix. I'm going to weld the sleeve to the shaft but we're going to try something a little different. My next door neighbor (1/4 mile away) has the coolest machine shop I've ever seen. They don't do automotive work but he's going to help me out. He said we should machine the splines out of the collar completely and make a sleeve to fit between it and the shaft, bore 2 holes in the collar and sleeve along with an access port in the case for a mig and press fit them to the shaft so the sleeve is concentric with the shaft and then weld the sleeve and shaft together. I'll try to take some pics and document what we do. Not sure when I'll have time to get to it but this should be interesting.

My wife said it is "doing it again", so I pulled the angle gear unit yesterday thinking the splines were not good enough to last with the new collar. I was pleasantly surprised to find no metal and splines still intact so I put it back together. Guess I should have driven it myself first. I'll have to take it for a couple of days and see for myself. My 15 year old drove it last night and said it feels like the clutch slipping. I fear it may be transmission time.

Greg, I know you’ve inspected it but we’re it me, I’d be having another close look at the DEM pump.

Have you personally experienced the symptom your wife & son have mentioned?

I’m just saying this because I was within hairs of buying an engine & transmission & replacing both on our 279k XC70 when I figured out it wasn’t engine/trans related at all. I didn’t like paying for an OEM quality DEM pump but it was a lot less labor & money than a trans.

As a matter of fact, I was driving our 136k stage one 04 V70 AWD the other day & was pretty sure I felt that car do the hose skipping thing. I was on the loud pedal pretty good too. Just saying it’s not necessarily mileage related.

Juuuust kidding...


I was speculating that as a simple test, to unequivocally rule out the DEM pump, you could unplug your DEM pump connector & drive with it like this. Or, rather, have your wife drive with it like that to verify whether or not it’s the DEM pump failing or other issues. I think, but am not sure, there may be a fuse for the AWD that I suppose you could pull. To me, unplugging the 2-conductor cable that goes directly to the DEM pump would be dead sure it’s not getting juice & your running FWD only. If no hose skipping/shuddering, there’s your problem.

I have not done this but the way I see it it really wouldn’t be much different than a completely failed pump. The ECM might not like seeing that there’s no current being used, but it seeing zero PSI being generated would be the same as a dead pump I’d think.

Wives/spouses/partners who are in touch with their cars are awesome and never to be taken for granted.

They will save you thousands of dollars over the ones who drive home and then mention the oil light was on for the trip.

I would've scanned with VIDA.... Common the DEM Pressure sensor goes, giving false readings. Looks like you have most of it done though. Don't forget to pick up a Haldex filter to replace the old one above the DEM pump.

Rear Diff and Angle gear uses the same oil now according to Volvo. Been there, fun times! I still would do the transmission service just to be safe, a drain and fill of the fluid.

With ignition on engine off you can hear the haldex humming. Fuse is in the rear cargo side bay. On mine I think it was 17.
Car runs fine as fwd only.

thanks for the post, i dont have an air chisel. I hope my collar sleeve wont be as difficult. Ive removed one before using a channel engine support, removed the fender and used the body and a blowtorch to pull it free. This time i will try using a bearing puller and heat first before removing fenders etc

Talk about soft metal, the things already rusting and its been sitting on the shelf. I hope it doesnt interfere with the oil seal

Failure is common. Most likely due to spinning tires on snow/ice/mud at high speed and then getting traction . when everything is spinning fast and then stop spinning by grabbing traction, something will break.
