Hi all,

2004 S60 2.5T AWD.

Had an issue where i had trouble shifting into park, kind of felt stuck, with the shifter button not going in as it should. Got it into park after trying for a few seconds. Works ok now, but the button seems like the mechanism is broken now:

I see online there are button repair kits. Are those worth it or should i replace the shifter? How easy is it to fix? Also seeing that there are different buttons as well as different knobs depending on if i have geartronic or not. How can i tell? Sellers are confusing me with geartronic vs not and pin version vs no pin.

I feel like it would be best to just get a replacement knob from a junkyard, but would want to make sure about whether my / the donar car have the Geartronic version. Would this fit my car: https://www.ebay.com/itm/173994976527

There are some small plastic parts inside that get old and break. There is a steel spring as well. Years ago I repaired mine (it looks like yours) using super glue. It still works.

Disassembly and reassembly was fiddly and difficult. I can't remember the details. If you like small mechanical puzzles, you can likely fix yours.

Thanks for the advice. Is this video you made for removal still valid: https://youtu.be/8r1F5lJgtOs looks to match my car. Also, when i get the used part, knowing it's the same year and automatic is enough? Or do i have to worry about other variations?

There was another automatic transmission, I believe a Geartronic with manual shifting. Not sure if that's compatible, but otherwise any 5 speed aisin after 2001 should work, I think the shifter in my S60 is from an S80 (nice wood insert one)

firstv70volvo - Great pictures! How could you tell which version of the button to get? Apparently 2004 can have both with and without the pin, and IPD says it's almost impossible to tell which you need without the button out (which I don't feel comfortable doing before getting a replacement knob or button kit)

When I replaced the shifter button I don't recall there being two types. Sounds like you'll have to pull the original out at least part way to find out the type.

Junkyard near me has the whole shifter assembly for $40. Will probably just pick that up as it's not much more than the button kit, and i can get it right away.

Quick job replacing the knob. Anyone need any of the other parts of the shifter assembly?
