PO340 code--cam shaft position sensor

Post by yabadabadoo1026 » Sun Feb 18, 2018 4:42 pm

this 01 s60 with just 130M miles is killing me with multiple codes

first a 420 suggesting catalyst system--------car running fine with that code/ refused to believe I needed another converter but willing
to put one on since an universal that needs cutting and welding isn't that much----------still it said "system"
which may not mean new converter necessarily

then a PO340 cam shaft position sensor bank 1-----------from what im reading that may explain it cutting out on me when driving
and very difficult to start and with horrible gas milage
then just yesterday a po304----------misfire--------I put a new plug in and no help-------I switched the coil for the offending cylinder
with another to see if I get a different code to confirm I need another coil/ no verdict yet

WHERE IS THAT CAM SHAFT POSITION SENSOR BANK 1-------------ive looked all over the internet and cant get a conclusive answer---one YouTuber says its on top of the transmission on drivers side best accessed taking the air cleaner housing and ive seen other comments its on the block / one said under the cover that accesses the coils and plug ( read that after I had already been in)

does the bank 1 suggest there is more than 1 on the car like the O2 sensor--------------is it possible that PO340 issue is causing the cylinder misfire

thanks for the help guys---brand new to the forum

It's right on the end of the camshaft, opposite to the timing belt end.

I got a code and found the 2 torx bolts were loose.

Bank of cylinders.

With a inline engine there is only one bank of cylinders. Some of the newer inline engines with dual variable valve timing (VVT) use bank 1 and bank 2 on the only bank of cylinders.

With a V6, V8, V10 or V12 there are two banks of cylinders.

P0340 can be the cause of P0420 and P300 - P0306.

Fix the P0340 first.

thank you gentlemen------------the 420 Catalyst System was on long before the PO340 and the PO304 started yesterday--------sure would love it if the 340 fix corrected the other codes but I haven't been lucky on anything in a long time

car started intermittently cutting out on me when driving as if the key was turned off, then it would start back up. But it is very difficult to crank. The cylinder miss im not finding ( unless my 304 becomes a 305 tomorrow meaning coil pack bad) now makes it undriveable. I know those who know meters know how to check them out but I don't do meters well so ill replace and just hope since that little nothing costs too much / seems an easy replace once I find it. Maybe ill get lucky too and find 2 screws backed out but I doubt it-----don't know how that could happen

Check the cable and connector first. The ECM is not hearing the CMP or not well enough. In short the CMP is not talking or you got trouble on the line.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

(P0340) ECM-3000 Camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Faulty signal

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

D2800350 Condition
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-3000 is stored if the control module does not register a signal from the camshaft position (CMP) sensor or counts too few flank changes during 5 crankshaft revolutions and / or 2 seconds has passed.

Substitute value
Uses the engine speed (RPM) sensor if it functions.

Possible source
  • Signal missing
    open-circuit in the signal cable
short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
short-circuit to supply voltage in the signal cable

    defective camshaft position (CMP) sensor.
Fault symptoms
None.

Anyone have a guess at why I get PO0340 only after shutting down engine and starting again. I can drive hundreds of miles with so svc light or code, only when I stop and start engine. I replace cam sensor, same issue? XC90 2.5T runs great, get great gas mileage, so no indications of problem other than code consistently coming on after shutting down and starting again.

The fault was there whilst the engine was running but the computer compensated.
Once shut down the fault is logged and you get the code.
If you moved a coil, wait until you see the results of that, be methodical, don't swap 3 things at once.
