No you don't need to take the shaft or flange off to do the filter and fluid.

Are they trying to take out the wrong allen to drain and there isn’t a drain? Just the fill plug on the upper left?

I ran out of time so I didn’t dive into this. It’s working fine. Bone dry, doesn’t seem to have any leakage. 20 year old oil? Yes.
