Ben's alarm has been intermittently yelling at me now for...a year? After much thought weighing pros and cons for rebuilding my alarm vs. buying a new one, I settled on a new one. I'll take my old alarm apart and if the condition is salvageable and the circuit board isn't destroyed, I'll rebuild that and sell it. That might be a fun side gig.
Anywho.
I opted to proceed with the procedure by removing the passenger headlight as I was removing the bumper because 1. I can and 2. I was finally putting yellow film on my fog lights. Makes perfect sense.
Even though the new alarm comes with a shiny new house, I kept the old one so I didn't have to grind on a safety bolt and fender liner rivets.
The alarm itself is held in by two, 10mm lock nuts (and a connector if you want to get technical). The top nut is easy enough to use your spanner and a ratcheting spanner makes even easier work of it. Yes, a closed spanner will be trapped but then you can use it to pull the module free once the bottom nut is loose too. Leverage!
To remove the hidden lower lock nut, I used a socket on a wee little ratcheting bit driver. It's still a tight fit but the fender liner is plastic and very forgiving if you poke it out to make room.
Once the nuts were free, the alarm can be wiggled out and the connector exposed and removed. The nuts do not need to be completely removed, just clear of the housing but my old part was being stubborn.
I didn't even have to break anything.
Don't forget to reconnect the alarm connector plug before your slide that bad boy home and button everything back up.
Using new hardware when the old hardware is perfectly good is what luxury is all about.

Thank you, Sir. If it needs to be a "real," exhaustive diy write-up...I am happy to do it over and document that as well.

My better half has forbidden me to run off a long list of alarm jokes for the hearing impaired.
Thanks for sharing , Starbuck, well done. Did you have to recode that in Vida or was it just plug/play?

BAHAHAHA.
Yeah in my house, deaf jokes are unheard of too.
I was taking a wait and see approach to recoding. So far no messages have popped up. When I'm done tinkering on the Miata, who has decided to intermittently present as an air cooled 70s VW, I will fire up VIDA and see what Benjamin has to say.

If you aren’t getting the service message on the dash, put checking Vida on the priority list below the monthly clocking of the tire fill stems

A local Volvo owning friend of mine has contacted me on the alarm issues he has had. He replaces the alarm batteries but he says <50% of the units he pulls from the junkyard are useable rebuilds due to fried circuits from battery leaks.
He has not mentioned any coding required when he swapped out the 2 on his cars. I will ask more questions as well as his source of batteries which are critical for the correct voltages.
Neil.
