PS: I spent time replacing the alarm battery on the 2004 V70, which was sold recently. I still have 2006 and 2007 S60s at home, if I ever have this issue ("alarm system needs servicing" etc) again, I will simply ignore it by pushing the button at the end of the turn signal stalk.

You don’t need to code the module to replace the siren, but if it is inop, you might not able to add keys. My Volvo dealer told me that back in 2014 when I keyed Catherine the 2005

sirens are plug n play,
I've pulled 3 from the boneyard, through the wheel well is quicker for me, a dremel to remove the rivets works, then use the dremel to cut slot in the security bolt head, stubby screwdriver gets it loose to spin out by hand.
All the used ones I've pulled were toasted by acid. So I just leave it unplugged, it doesn't affect anything else.
