Just back on the forum after many years away from V70 ownership (and glad to see that it's still active)... first job was to tie the rear exhaust silencer back up after the welded mount around the outlet pipe gave way due to corrosion; that was barely 14 hours after we acquired it for my 17 year old son!

New back box and middle silencer subsequently ordered - it looks like the failing one is the original so it's done very well to survive for 20 years. I'm sure there will be much more to come...

Following on from my exhaust exploits, it was the coolant pipe from the block to the top of the radiator next.

The PO said that it had a small coolant leak that he hadn't been able to trace; if he'd actually looked to the side of the radiator he might have seen the witness marks of coolant all the way down the side of it and the occasional drip from the hose. It transpired to be a very poorly fitted and the jubilee clamp was only holding 70% of the pipe; needless to say that is now addressed and we'll await the next early ownership experience (beyond it being comfortable and quite rapid).

Years and vibration caused that pin to drive up, the spring tilted the hinge, plastic broke. Pretty typical for Volvo.

Luckily, plastic is very easy to work with. All you need is a piece of 14 GA stainless sheet, plasma cutter, metal brake and a bit of Gorilla Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive. Fixed!

It wasn't my usual MOT tester today, he was going to a funeral so I had the garage owner do the test. I've been going to the same garage for MOTs for 39 years and this is the first time the owner has tested my car.

Now that is one loyal customer! It is great when you can find a repair shop like that you can rely on. I have a local shop I use and recommend here in Calgary for the reasons they are honest and reliable. Funnily enough it is owned by a fellow Scot ex-pat from Fife. He is now in semi-retirement and his son is now running the business. They are always busy.

Correct Neil. Before I found this MOT garage it was always hit or a miss as to whether the car was going to get a fair and honest test. Too many cowboys trying to pull a fast one to get the work repairing the car. I once put a car in for an MOT and called in the afternoon to be told it had failed on a burst brake pipe. I knew the pipes were fine when I left it there so I went in and drove it out using the handbrake. Upon inspection I could see the pipe hadn't broke from the test, it had been snipped with a pair of pliers or similar.
