Re: Did I Fry My '06 V70??

Post by Toby411 »

Had some extra time tonight, so I pulled the battery from my '01 V70 T5 and put it in my '06. No dice :(

On my first start attempt, it initially almost fired up. But then it reverted to the previous pattern. I was getting the following messages:
-- Reduced Engine Performance
-- Transmission Service Required

I was about the close up shop for the night when I thought to make a video. As you'll see, new messages popped up, including "Coolant Level Low" (it isn't):

Thoughts?

did you erase the fault codes ?
Is it sparking at the plugs, are the injectors clicking ? listen with a screwdriver on your ear touching the injector, have someone turn the key.
It might be flooded after all the cranking too.

Agree with clearing the codes first.

Do you hear the fuel pump priming with the key in position 2?

Can you monitor the MAF air flow when trying to start the car. See if air is metering correctly, if the fuel pressure is correct, and rpms.

Ive heard a bad cam position sensor can immobilize the car and prevent starts.

Edit:

I saw the rev dance a bit so i suspect cam position sensor is working. Really check the fuel pressure, your grounds, and air flow.

On maybe 1/6 of my attempts to start, the engine won't crank, but I hear a rapid clicking sound.
Thats a dead battery. The max current draw is when the starter is cranking from rest. After it starts turning, the draw drops.
I calculate your battery voltage to be 11.1 Volts from that statistic. That, and the Vdash readout.

Sorry for the slow reply. My wife's car started acting up the other weekend when I was supposed to work on the V70. So, I spent the past week using my spare time to diagnose her car. I finally had some time to test a few things on the V70. Here's the update:

-- Put in a fresh battery (tried 3 different batteries, just to be sure) & cleared all the trouble codes
-- Attempted and failed to start
-- Checked for spark—I'm getting spark
-- Checked fuel pressure—pressure is good and injectors appear to be working properly
-- New code popped up: camshaft position sensor failure on intake side (cleared and scanned again with new battery—same result)
--> Checked voltage on harness 3-prong connector for sensor. I'm getting 5 volts from the computer but the other two prongs are at 0. My understanding is that the ground should be at 0, but the other should be 12 volts. Not getting power from the battery I guess? Didn't have time for a thorough inspection, but a quick visual inspection didn't turn up any loose connections or damaged wires.
--> Checked voltage on the exhaust camshaft position sensor—same result.

Any ideas?

Bad cam position sensor will inhibit a start. When they go bad, the Volvos don’t start. It’s a bit of a pain in the ass to get too, and you need to be careful not to break the mount if I recall.

Measure the ohms to it and report.

Maybe a half blown fuse is creating a voltage divider somewhere. Check all fuses carefully

Most of the sensors run on regulated 5V supplies, so I dont think your voltages are bad. You run critical stuff on low voltages becuase the primary charging system runs anywhere between 12.0 Volt and 13.9 volt depending on load, state of charge, etc.
