Help! How to clear “reduced engine performance” limp mode

Post by Volvalive »

2006 XC70 a/c pump froze up and melted the a/c clutch. “Reduced engine performance” message and limp mode activated. I pulled over to the side of the road and saw the smoking a/c clutch under the hood. Turned off the a/c and engine runs fine. Got home at 20mph, now it’s stuck in limp mode. I disconnected the battery and put the two terminals together for several hours, then reconnected the battery and limp mode is still on. Can anyone tell me how to deactivate limp mode?

Do you have VIDA ?
I'm guessing but it would seem to follow that if the ac clutch burned , the clutch solenoid/control wire is shorted.
look up the fuse, if it blew it will blow again , try disconnecting the wire. looks like a single wire butt connector.
You might need to pull the alternator or just snip the wire, it comes with a new wire anyway,..Limp should clear at that point.

Turn defroster off because it commands the AC to dry the windshield.
If you want to wait until spring to get into the repair try a 12v windshield heater.

You'll probably need to clear the code to get it out of limp mode. For that you will need a scanner or Vida.

Thanks for the reply.

The actual a/c pump seized up. The clutch friction burned up because of the non-turning pump shaft and the clutch face rubbing against it. The magnet is fine, and there are no blown fuses that I can see.

I do not have vida. Are you suggesting that vida is necessary to clear the limp mode?

The only problem with the car is that it is in limp mode. Do I need to drive it for a certain number of miles before it clears? Please help! I’m struggling to get all my kids to their appointments, etc with the reduced transportation.

Many lower end OBD2 testers can clear engine codes. It will depend on if the car is seeing it as an engine issue or an A/C one where a low end one may not work. Some parts places may loan testers. Harbor Freight sells cheap ones as does Amazon.

If the A/C pump is seized, I would not try to drive the car until you remove the serpentine belt or it could snap. You will have no Alternator for charging but you can move the car at least. If the belt is burnt, you could just cut it to remove it as you will likely need a new one anyway.

Belt is fine.
A/C pulley spins great.

There are no codes present on the computer at all.

I ONLY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO CLEAR LIMP MODE!

Does anyone with real experience in a Volvo dealership have insight with this situation?

Please help!

Please read the entire text string and believe me regarding the process I am describing. Thank you so much for any real assistance with this. Do I have to send it in to a dealership or can a local mechanic shop handle it, or can I do it myself? (I was a UH 60 mechanic for years).

vida can deep dive and find faults many cheaper scanners can't detect.
If you take it to the dealer they will plug it into vida and charge you $150 or 200.

Or Use your own laptop and get vida set up on a thumb drive $120 and a JRL cable for $110 from David Leach.
Or buy vida all set up on one of his laptops, you probably need the jrl cable too, I don't know. Ask him.

What you will not find in vida is a "clear limp mode " command, but you should find clues as to what tripped it.
The ecm is probably still seeing the problem that caused limp mode.
