What did you do to your P2 Volvo today?

Took a little drive to a school concert. It went from right at freezing to snowing and dropped into the 20’s in an hour - shiny streets, no sand yet. I haven’t put the snows on yet.

I pulled out from stop signs and got front wheel spin. I gave it a little goose on a safe turn and got FWD understeer and a wide arc.

So I’m either not getting any RWD action and need to do some Haldex service (still in a box), or it’s just REALLY slippery for summer tires.

Open the door and look at the rears next time......hopefully they are spinning too, go do this test in a vacant parking lot. My Haldex pump on the new car packed it in so I received order of a bunch of parts and will do a tutorial in the new year. Hopefully yours is still working. Check #19 fuse in the left rear fuse panel.

Oh well, i went to the garage this morning and they started to remove the dashboard to get the heater core out and inspecting the hoses connections. Passenger seat and Carpet out to dry. The Volvo tech tried to find an alternate way to remove the heater core but looks like no other ways to do it...

That is very inexperienced Volvo tech. It takes about 2 hours to replace a core. Or less, if you are experienced. Dashboard stays in place, of course.

I tried to tell him twice how it could be done. One of the blend door arms was also broken and they have added new under dash foam protection. They made it the Volvo way and i can tell the bill will be hard to swallow this time.

They even removed the seats, doh... What a bunch of douchebags. I would be coming up to the shop to punch their faces after seeing that.

They f-ing broke the blend door arm, because they haven't turned the heat full on, so that the arm moves out of the way.

TL/DR: Nail in tire, changed wheel speed sensor and power steering pump.

Busy and frustrating night. 05 XC90 at home for wheel speed sensor. Arrived with flat tire, aired up to find a roofing nail in it. Called my local shop at 4:35pm, said get it here in 10 min and I can fix you up. Dang guys wouldn't charge me…donated to pizza fund for their guys.

Tire fixed I proceeded to change the front passenger wheel speed sensor. This was the second one as the first one was an Amazon special to get it quickly (kid is 45 min away at university). Install the new one from FCPEuro to find that after clearing codes ABS and traction control would still freak out, same code front right wheel speed. I then started looking at the pins in the harness, a little bit tweaking on them a bit with a pick. Started working for a mile or two, but then the ABS went wonky again. I think I’m gonna pass this one on to my shop, has to be harness or maybe CV shaft tone wheel I can look at.

Car number two (02 S60) arrived to fix the growling power steering pump. Pretty easy fix to swap that out with a new eBay unit and bleed the system. The sound is better but there’s still some growl there, I think I need a stethoscope to determine if it’s something in the engine or the alternator that was replaced previously.

Both of these ironically are at 213,500 miles and getting rough around the edges. Don’t lots of maintenance and in the “keep the alive” stage.

I get ribbed by my family and friends for spending hours cleaning the seasonal wheels when removed, and before storage in wheel covers.
Yes, I even pick all the stones out the treads!

This wheel change season, I cleaned the wheels and picked the stones and guess what?! one of the new last season tires on the R had a wood screw in it and one on the 'new' 06 V70 AWD had a wire nail in it. The R tire was under warranty so repaired free of charge (screw fortunately had not gone all the way through), and the other my buddy took to work (he sold me the V70 AWD) and removed the nail. Again, fortunately the nail had not gone all the way through. Over the years I have found several screws and nails in the car tires. When you have sometimes up to 4 sets to clean and store it ups the chances for tire damage to be found. Am I nuts? Probably!

On the tire front, I have only driven the 06 V70 a few times and not particularly far as not had a need to. However, I did a longer run a couple of days ago and it sounded like a wheel bearing at the front was going. Yesterday I took the car for a longer run and realized the chances are high the issue is the new winter tires! I've had this issue before and there were comments that buyers had found the tires noisy. These are noisy, as changes in road surface makes a huge difference. On new surface no noise! Old surfaces fairly loud like a wheel bearing.

Reminds me of a friend who replaced his front wheel bearings twice due to front end grumbling on the car. He mentioned the issue to me. I asked what tires he had fitted? Michelin X-Ice. The early X-Ice tires were terrible on dry road and sounded like bad bearings. He swapped his tires to his summers and sure enough the noise disappeared!

The tires I have are General Altimax of some sort.

Fitted a new Stabilus hood strut as it was losing it's hold now it is colder. Also have ordered a new radio head unit (Alpine double Din) to replace the single din Kenwood unit. That will ultimately get relocated to our son's car to give him bluetooth capabilites. However, I plan to fit a back up camera as the car has no rear parking sensors, and truth be told the buttons on the Kenwood are too small for me to see and read!

Also ordered an integral camera/license plate light unit from a company in Europe someone linked on MVS. They do many parts for P2 XC70's but some fit other P2 models too. They have modified the RTI dash unit to be touch screen capable and work on the XC70 and other P2's. I was tempted, but just couldn't be bothered as there is some modifying needed done to the wiring I believe to raise and lower the unit.

Back up camera is because my wife drives both our son's 06 XC70 with back-up sensors and the Toyota with a back-up camera. She is so used to those I'm worried the car will get crunched as she is waiting for the back-up sensors to kick in and they don't!

I restored the original alternator in my 2007 V70.

The freewheel pulley died and my local starter/alternator rebuild shop gave me the one they had on hand.
However, in 2005 Volvo added a signal to the output. The 'old style' regulator makes the system think it's not charging, even though it was.
I think it might be called a "LIN Network" but I'm not certain.
I told the shop and they rebuilt my original alternator and included my original regulator.

NOTE: The shop was a 3rd generation business which I loved.
They sold out.
I wonder if my old friends would've known about the "2005- " change.

It sounds like you got the early SPA generation change to LIN Bus alternator instead of current excitation. These types are not swappable. I will fly by you on Saturday at EWR on my way home! Ill wave!
