Post control arm replacement update: The mechanic showed me both control arms and they were junk. The ball joints were digging into their seat, and the rubber bushings were so loose it was almost like it was designed to be like that. He put it in a vice and spun it like a top!
He also said we were missing a bolt for the ball joint passenger side, and an axle bolt on the driver's side. Yikes! Lastly, he said the engine mounts look fine, along with the CV axles (besides a tear in the boot), but he also said there's really no way to tell if the axles are bad or not. Is that true?
I'm glad I got the work done, because now I go down the road and don't feel like something is about to fall off. Gotta put the fiancé in the car; I'm okay with me going out with a bang, but not her.
Unfortunately, it's still got the shakes. This time, it actually seems less likely to happen, but only by about 10%. There was one segment of road i remember accelerating through and it didn't shake violently, but it's still there, intensity the same. I'm going to have to see if there's a specific RPM range in which it is worse now that the control arms are replaced. It does not pull in any direction while accelerating or after accelerating.
I feel more confident doing the CV axles rather than doing the control arms. I had a feeling that the control arms were going to be similar to the wheel bearings I did last year. Seeing this crustiness gives me nightmares.
So we're thinking CV axle? Is there truly "no way to tell"? Around the same time last year, I was told it was the rack itself. Still not the idea?

my CV's have never gone bad but my understanding is they start to click in slow speed turns.
I would consider replacing the boot.
to pull the axle you need to disconnect the ball joint so the knuckle can swing outward.
Its not much different than doing the control arms. You still need a big pry bar and S hook to pull the control arm down at the ball joint.
The reason the axle bolt went awol is its a single use stretch bolt, something like 36 ft lbs then 90 degs.
If you do this order a couple of new axle bolts, they about $4 from FCP.
But I woudn't touch it til spring.

Oh to have a warm garage and a lift...
I've heard the same thing about the clicking, but I've also heard that for sway bar links (which I'm sure are junk too). I'll have to listen and hope that I hear it only on one side and not the other.
Boot will be taped up for the winter and replaced in the spring. Do I'm right to believe everyone that anything but the GKN axles are junk? Is it worth looking to see if a junk yard has any?

Also, we're not thinking steering rack, right? Got a diagnosis over a year ago saying it was bad (he never mentioned the control arms or wheel bearings, went straight for the rack).

My friend purchased an induction heater based on feedback from a local import repair shop he uses. This induction heater is more expensive than the other ones listed on Amazon but it is extremely durable:

It works extremely easily and saved me from broken brake bleed nuts and several suspension parts that were located next to rubber parts that couldn't be heated safely with a torch.

end links usually click at low speeds over small bumps.cmayo1 wrote: ↑20 Dec 2025, 19:56 Oh to have a warm garage and a lift...

sounds like yours is from something rotating, could be something as simple as an out of balance wheel.
you could try rotating front wheels to back.
if youre in south NH theres a big pick n pull in N. Billerica with lots of volvos. Hollands salvage.
i have a garage a lift and a heater and i'm still not going out there.

I've had wheels balanced back in July, and just put a different set on them last weekend and still the same issue. I've seen Hollands Salavge on car-part.com, truthfully just afraid of something falling ontop of me while I'm under it (horror stories from my father). I should go there and look before making a decision. I'm near Jean Guy's, but they usually charge 25% more than most people.jonesg wrote: ↑21 Dec 2025, 07:40 end links usually click at low speeds over small bumps.
