Is this car not a V70? So FWD not AWD? If so, not angle gear.

It could be a bad axle CV joint or there is a support bearing on the RHS axle as well that can go bad.

As Cn90 suggested, check the engine mounts, and in particular the one under the crank pulley. that one when it fails, it separates the rubber insulator from the metal mounts. You can use a small piece of wood on a floor jack and put it under the oil an towards the RHS of the pan. Jack it gently and see if the rubber separates. This can also be easier to see by taking the RHF wheel off and support the car under the subframe.

Then jack the engine gently and check from the wheel well side and see if the rubber lifts when jacked.

As it turns out it was the CV axle, the thing just about fell out once I removed the bolt from the end. Runs pretty good for a 25 year old car. Once I got the axle back in and everything tightened back up I took out for a “test” drive, there is very little wrong with the engine, the shocks and struts need to be changed but a little difficult without the funds. That will have to wait. My first thought was the transmission was shot but started checking other things when I found a bad vacuum line.

Anyway we are on the road again, for now. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

i had a similar problem with a chevy malibu wagon, hard shifting slamming, it was due to misfire ..not trans.
a mechanic told me the engine had to rev much higher to build vacuum to command shifts and that was the slamming.
the TCM probably monitors all the parameters for shifting in volvos too.
that axle bolt is single use , use blue loctite if re-using it.
