After installing a new Volvo fuel filter I gave her a good scrubbing with dish soap. Now got her back in the garage to buff on polish and wax. It's 68f here in Southern TN now.

Dumped it in the tank when I got it down to half full. Did a 50 mile trip and unhooked the battery to clear the code when I got home. I'm skeptical it will work but time will tell.
When was the last time you replaced oxygen sensors?
The car had 124k miles when I bought it. It now has 161k miles. I haven't touched the oxygen sensors. BTW, the light is on again.

Happy to say that while likely temporary, the backflush of the AW55 was successful, the transmission pump is no longer whining with low temps. I highly recommend this if you cannot change the filter for one reason or another.

Replace both. Rear one can be PITA, but it is less critical than the front one.

I was worried when going to replace the O2 sensors on the 02 XC70 last year. I was expecting a fight so called on my ex-Volvo mechanic mate to help. I had soaked them in PB Blaster for a week or so prior a couple of times while working on the car on other stuff.

My buddy pulled his air hammer out and used it to hit the side of the O2 sensor on one of the flats and both just popped loose immediately! I have never seen O2 sensors come out that easily! Bigger pain was the actual access to the connectors on them.

Good Luck!

Neil.

You need a tool like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/BOOMSTART-Extr ... B0B49YZBKN I personally built my own.

You definitely need an air compressor however.

The full procedure is dead simple. You unplug the very lowest transmission cooler hose. You fit a hose to that hose, using a clamp is recommended or get ready for it to pop off and spray everything with oil. You then do the first hack, you push straight air (lower to 60-70 psi), this is the initial push that might drop gunk straight into the old oil. You then remove the transmission drain plug and drain everything out. Using a sieve, a cloth, anything to act as a filter and filter out the old oil to spot gunk.
If you can spare some bucks, backflush with clean oil, you can use anything like the cheapest Mannol JWS3309. Or else reuse your old oil for this procedure.
You will your oil of choice in the pump from the amazon link, connect your air compressor to that, connect the pump via hoses to the lower transmission cooler hose, use strong clamps, you will need it. Drain plug is removed. Then let air into the pump and it will force oil through the filter, dont overpump it, and control pressure too. At this point oil will start leaking from the drain plug opening. Collect it, and reuse it, but always filter it out, or use new oil - up to you. I recommend having the rear slightly elevated, this is to help some chunks from getting stuck or pooling elsewhere in the tranny.

Repeat this procedure several times.

I scraped ice for 15 minutes so Mrs BB could run some errands. It’s nice that our BlackBetty fires right up in single digit (f) temps.
