Oil filter relocation 2004 xc70

Post by enotslim »

Risking unending ridicule I will ask, how about relocating the oil filter for easy access from the engine bay? Combined with siphoning existing oil through the dipstick access line, an oil change could be done quickly without jack stands or ramps.

Risk of line failure, leaks?
Incomplete removal of used oil?
Too little room to relocate?

I am not averse to elevating the vehicle or serious repairs (cf my posts on other topics) but I'm always interested in easier and/or better.

To address your concerns:
a) There are lots of remotely mounted filters which use such lines. I doubt there's be a problem with that.
b) There's always some oil which doesn't drain. Do each method and measure what drains. The consensus is "it doesn't matter".
c) You might have to buy / have made hoses which are longer than you thought.

However, the oil pan on our 5-cylinder engines surrounds much of the filter housing's circumference. The design of the adapter has to have its hoses placed where they can fit and lead away without kinking.

Start looking at adapters and see what's offered.
Your idea is a simple one, but the market likely has adapters designed for surface mounted filters, not shrouded ones.

I would ask myself how much money and time I am willing to invest into this project. Then I would look at odometer and question myself how many more miles I will be able to get out of this car prior to it draining all my savings in repairs. Then estimate number of oil changes at 3-4k interval that this car will likely need until you will not longer be able to throw money at her(please note, i am not suggesting that volvo will quit, I point to you possibly being done with it). With possible average of 10min time saving between possibly relocated oil filter and current position...Plus where are you planning to fit it in? It is pretty cramped under the hood with 2.5T.
Another possible solution to save you some time- suction oil put every 2k through deepstick and replace filter every other oilchange(i know i will get some hate here).

If you are too old and lose interest, best is to find a local shop and bring the oil filter and oil. Win win situation...you don't have to do it, the mechanic makes some $ to feed his hungry family.

Have been extracting motor oil, transmission fluid and master cylinder brake fluids since 2019. Upgraded to an 8L unit so do not have to pour out during an oil change. Unit doesn’t extract well if it’s too full. Not having to drain the motor oil and pouring it into a container then cleaning the drain pan is well worth the extractor’s investment, not to mention the time savings and great benefit of cleanliness. Just pour into a 5 gallon water jug and it done and no mess.

This is a transmission fluid drain and fill for the 2002 V70XC. You can continue with the Gibson if you choose. I rarely just do a drain and fill but wanted to see if the transmission was okay with the Synthetic Multi-Vehicle 3309 equivalent. The fluid is not as dirty as it looks. Using the new syringe to put fluid back in. Initially purchased it for the transfer case.

Wasn’t paying attention so didn’t realize the second section of hose is for extra length rather a different size opening. Wouldn’t need the funnel had I discovered this earlier.

Similar unit.

Extraction and high quality filter would be my path. That might make sense for me in my new low mile home on Long Island. The xc90 is the high mileage car last year, almost 6k miles

Nice to hear from you, Dave. Your graciously donated v70 is still serving new owner well …how many years ago was the? Wow!
