Power steering hose...Really?

Post by Redbox »

Hi, I've got a leaking high pressure power steering line (rubber section). I read someplace that you have to drop the sub-frame to replace it. I'm really hoping that's not the case. No lift, no garage, etc. 04 V70R M66
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oooof. On a R with m66 it’s really crowded in there. You probably do have to drop the sub frame. Can you live with until Spring?

I can’t get access to the ps line nuts ( oring seals< not flare nuts) on my T5 without dropping the subframe

Worst job I ever did on my vehicle was replacing the hi-pressure power steering hose in-situ.

For your sanity: pay a mechanic with the proper tools to do it. I am not the same man I used to be prior to doing this job.

EDIT: Also, I wish you good luck selecting the right P/N for 2004 which had approximately 7,000 different SKUs for the steering rack and associate hose sets. On the hose where the transition/crimp is from the rubber to the hard line, there should be a P/N stamped on that crimp. Use this when selecting the new one to avoid massive frustration.

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone. Right now it is leaking bad enough to keep me off the road. That video gave me some hope, but I can't imagine trying to do it without being able to actually get your hands in there. I tried a temporary repair, but it failed right away. Need to regroup...

It CAN be done on 2001 V70 T5 with front drive only Automatic without dropping subframe, BUT it is hard.

My advices:
- Use only Volvo Genuine hose.
- Ask a local Volvo Indy for an estimate.

The reason: many ppl in this gorum are gurus and even so, they complained about this job lol...

Where is your leak? By the ferrule or the hose itself ruptured somewhere in the middle? With the first one you may get away with hydraulic hose crimper (~$100 on Amazon) and new ferrule. Latter one would require removing intake manifold, which is not bad if your PCV is long due for replacement. Subframe drop is only required if metal part of the line is damaged.

Mine has a small cut/crack (about 1/4") in the rubber section just below the ferrule that connects the two rubber sections.

Is there enough room to flare the pipe and put in a piece of flex pipe until Spring? The other path would be to cut out the rubber hose, route oil back to the reservoir and drive it manual steering for the interim
