Exhaust Leak 2004 XC70

Post by TroutJim »

Took my 2004 XC70 198k to the shop yesterday. They found an exhaust leak in area where the downpipe meets the turbo mount flange. They suggested that I find a muffler shop that can weld the downpipe flange to the downpipe flange. They said that it has worked well for other customers.

They also said that the downpipe has been know to breakaway. Not sure if replacing gasket and bolts would be a better fix? It looks like it is complicated to access flanges from top? Not hard to access from bottom?

I would appreciate any ideas and suggestions.

do you mean the flex pipe which is above the cat converter...
or the aft cat flange.?
I had to weld both.

A good muffler shop can do it, probably not a chain store like midas, they like to replace everything and it will be crap parts.

Not sure. I am out of town for a couple of weeks. From shop description they are saying flange on downpipe to flange on turbo exhaust.

the upper flange, or pre cat, is far less likely to fail unless its the flex pipe weld.

ft cat flange fails all the time, either weld or get a flange repair coupler.
Thats what I used, its holding 2 yrs on so far.

The upper flex pipe weld is prone to breaking too, I replaced with a Walker flex section and welded it myself.
