Volvo Repair Database Tool set: What's the biggest I should expect to need?

Post by StarmanDXE »

So, I'm looking into getting a set of wrenches and (hopefully) a good socket wrench set. I would love to get a 30~40 piece set of SAE/metric sockets like my dad's got, but I'm not sure if I can find anything that nice (or swing the $$$).

That said, does anyone happen to know the biggest socket/wrench I would possibly need for this S60 so that I can try to include that and a decent spread of sizes below it?

Also, was looking at that Torx Bit Set that IPD sells and was wondering if there would be much use for the T-10 (as opposed to just a screwdriver) or the T-27 (as it seems like kind of an odd size).

Thanks for any/all help! :)

I don't think I've ever use either of those odd torx sizes. the ones that come to mind are the T15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and I believe, 40. In regards to the socket...you need a 30mm socket to turn the cranck shaft on the engine when you do a timing belt on earlier 850 and 70 series cars- don't know if it's the same size on yours or not (of course, it would be rare that you would ever use this).

75% of fasteners on Volvos are TORX fasteners

Alright, cool. I was given a set with all of those (I do believe). But, I wonder why IPD is pushing their set with those few odd numbers... :?

Ok. So, 30mm is basically the upper end. That will make it easier when looking at socket-wrench sets and normal wrenches.

Thanks!

Some interior fittings use T-27; it's a more common size inside the car than outside (yes, I deliberately bought a T-27 driver!)

Wow. If I ever have an opportunity to do that myself, I think I'll just buy the T-55 individually instead of finding a set for it!

And, as far as the T-27 goes, I hate these stupid Torx heads as the sizing is so hard to get right. I have used a T-25 in a T-30 I'm sure countless times :? So, maybe you're just using a T-25 in a T-27 with (most likely) no troubles...?

In the 850, I believe that T-15 and T-20 were the more common sizes to be used on the interior. Any idea if that holds true for the S60? (Granted, I can't see myself needing a Torx ratchet over just a simple screwdriver for anything interior... So, maybe I'll just stick with the drivers I have and buy individual Torx ratchet heads as I need them for engine stuff...)

Also, there was some size wrench I kept borrowing from my landlord for this, that, and the other thing for my 850. I think it might have been 8mm or 12mm or something... Anyone happen to know common sizes for any nuts so I don't accidentally buy one of those wrench sets which skips some sizes (and they happen to be the sizes I need!)?

There are at ton of 10mm socket sized bolts all over all Volvo's I've ever dealt with...I always keep a couple of these around (because I hate hunting for them) on a stubby ratchet.

Alright. So, this is what my dad has as far as a socket wrench (and what I sought out to buy for myself, basically). It's a nice set of short sockets and a few deep-drive sockets (which I didn't realize until just now are all SAE, no metric):

Image

I went to Sears Hardware, and they have a new line of Evolv products. Very reasonably price and they carry a Limited Lifetime Warranty. (Warranty on manufacturing defects as opposed to Craftsman's replacement for anything. I am guessing this is due to the rubberized grips and whatnot on the Evolv products.) Anyway, this case is about the same size and was pretty great overall. But I was very bothered by the fact that there were no deep-drive and clearly they were meant to go into the lid where there is nothing... (Must be those marketing jerks... ). But, yeah. This one runs $30:

Finally I found this one at Sears in the mall. Only $50 and it has a good deep drive assortment (SAE and metric), a bunch of nicely sized wrenches, and more screwdriver bits including Torx of T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, and T40:

So, I believe I will be keeping that one and taking the $30 back. Overall I am quite pleased. Now, maybe I will get myself a torque wrench...

On that note, any idea what the higher-end torques needed on this car are so that I can get the cheapest wrench possible that will still do most of the work?

Thanks!

(As an aside, I looked at Craftsman sets, and they had absolutely no decent sets with both SAE and metric. You were paying a minimum of $80 [on sale] for anything half-decent with both sizings and then it came with a bunch of stupid allen-wrenches and crap [and also some nut-driver bits which were kinda cool.] Edit: Here's a picture of one I considered. I forgot that it came with a 1/4" and a 3/8" ratchet. That kind of bothered me... And also I think the 4 wrenches were all SAE... Not to mention that that case was mega huge for what was inside! [Sadly I couldn't open it due to security measures...])

Wheel lugs are tightened to right at 100ft. lbs on your S60. That's probably the most you'll need in regards to torque.
