Volvo Repair Database Buying '04 S60 - Problems with intake valves?

Post by hutch1 »

Greetings!

I'm considering purchasing a 2004 S60 as an upgrade from my 850. However, the MSN.cars site reports that the 2004 S60's have problems with the intake valves going bad and needing replacement at a cost of about $1,800.

Is this really a known problem with this model year?

Are there other problems with this model year I should be aware of?

I appreciate any knowledge folks might be willing to share!

Thanks - Joe

there were some engines built with hard seats for CNG fuel but with gasoline valves. The softer valves need the corresponding seats. THe valve would have wear ring where it wears on seat and end up causing poor cold running and then misfiring. THe problem shows up earlier usually and would almost be certain to have surfaced by 75K miles. It was not that widespread but could not be tracked to specific engines and there was no way to tell without taking cylinder head off after engine had accumulated miles. The warranty on the car of that year was 4 yr/50K miles so the problem was though to show up under warranty.
