Re: My 1st P2 (XC70) Project impossible?

Some really interesting facts I've learned about XC '01 valve bodies. If the chassis number falls over a certain range the part number becomes 30651849. This number then supersedes to number 30713188 when inputted to a Volvo dealer's search engine.

While searching for possible donor vehicles for valve body I learned that a post '05 AWD trans from a S60 happens to have the same part number (30713188) on the valve body as an approximately post August '01 XC through to '02.

The '03 and '04 XC70 valve body is a different part number again and shared with the XC90 up to '05.

This is very promising indeed as almost any '05 plus AWD valve body will interchange with a XC '01-'02 valve body if it's built between certain chassis ranges. There may need to be TCM updates to allow this to happen but so far it looks VERY good.

Looks like a later donor vehicle is what I will find for a good valve body.

Also learned that my chassis range qualifies for the cheapest available trans complete from Volvo for around $2,400 COMPLETE (plus shipping of course) VERY TEMPTING!!

Most other transmissions complete range from $2,900 to $3,100

Hope this thread dispels many assertions that it's not worth fixing an '01 XC70 (given the chassis number is within the right range)

Yeah I thought so too until I looked it up on Vida 2011A. It doesn't apply to all '01s and '02s; just over a certain chassis range. I've been making notes for 3 days over it and have gone over the part numbers again & again before posting here.

I think it all lies in the TCM software running. I don't think you can put the '05 plus 30713188 valve body in an earlier model without a flash upgrade of the TCM to match the later hardware. The chassis numbers involved are 36387-94999 running B5244T3 engine.

If you go over to any of the Volvo dealer part sellers like Volvo Country Parts you can plug the numbers in to see the super session of the original XC '01 valve body number of 30651849 It supersedes to 30713188 which is an '05 plus valve body.

I've gone over to VolvoSpeed to hear that the solenoids won't work on the '01s yet they share the same part numbers from '01-'07, as well as with the '08 S60s, so that's numbers 30651854, 8636198, 8636199, 8636200, 8636201 which are shared by ALL AW55-50s or so Vida says. I'm going to get on the phone with my local Volvo parts guy and see if everything lines up as I said but for now just putting it out there.

Later I may be buying an '08 S60 AWD (written off) to test the theory.

Missed out on the '08 S60 AWD but have my eye on a "02 S60 AWD whose valve body/gearbox should transplant.

The car is almost ready for a engine/gearbox pull from the top however I may have made a mistake with the driveline. I removed all six allen headed (6mm) bolts at the gearbox end of the propshaft however the propshaft may need to be unbolted from the rear to gain clearance as it doesn't seem to want to disengage from the gearbox end.

The question I have is should I remove the angle gear from the gearbox as per Vida's instructions or can I just yank the angle gear up and out with the gearbox by just undoing the 6 allen head bolts as mentioned?

We remove the angle gear
(Probably needs to be resealed anyway)!
Not sure why you can't remove the propshaft on the front end, perhaps after some PB blaster some tapping is in order

Thanks JRL. I guess once the angle gear is removed that gives me a bunch of leverage to separate it from the prop shaft anyway.

It's already Monday morning here so looks like it's a next weekender.

Tried to lift both gearbox and engine out through the top on Sunday but gee that's a tight squeeze. It was just doable with a P80 but the ABS lines are very prominent and I fear endless brake bleeding to get rid of air pockets (though I may just have to run into this because my ABS pump may be faulty) if I remove the ABS setup

Looks as though I'll be dropping the subframe sometime soon. Just need diagram or good picture of the engine dropping apparatus (wooden Shaolin Temple style preferred)

Anyone have a pic or diagram of how to handle the weight of the engine\trans over the fenders?

It had been so long since I've posted on this thread I thought I'd just update it quickly.

The motor and transmission is about to be dropped with the complete subframe hopefully very soon. In between sorting the S60AWD and keeping up with weekend chores it's been a struggle to keep this project going. I'm hoping to squeeze in a trip to the snowfields before committing to this again 8)

So finally I built a support frame to take the weight of the engine and transmission but have come across a snag. I can't release the steering coupling from the rack. Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

So much work/time spent on 13 y.o. car. You would have been better off buying 03+, imo.
