2004 XC70 transmission service required, OBDII codes Inside.

Post by IMSITTINGINYOURCHAIR » Sat Aug 24, 2013 8:42 pm

car has 149k and hasn't had the trans fluid changed. but plans are under way as soon as I source the fluid.

Today I drove 63 miles one way to visit a new store, the weather was at about 95 at the peak of the day.

about 30 - 45 miles in I turned to a road that had an incline that I hit at about 45 but the limit was 55. I accelerated and the car downshifted, pulled as normal then it up shifted rather hard and the gear selector displayed "4" as it did last time. then the message, yellow triangle, and Check engine light came on. 10 miles down the road I found a place to stop and re start the car to get 1,2,3&5th gear back. I drove it home a few hours later with cooler weather and no problems other than the triangle, dim message, and engine light. I went to my auto parts store to retrieve and clear the codes. Here the three it had stored,

P0700 - Transmission control system malfunction indicator lamp request (confirmed)

P0740 - Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit open (confirmed)

P0700 - Transmission control system malfunction indicator lamp request (pending)

engine temps never climbed above 200 that I know of.

I plan to buy the vida/dice for my laptop when I get paid in two weeks, but this week I'm going to buy the bluetooth obd module for my phone to look at the data that I can see untill then. im also going to do a fluid change to see if it smooths out as I suspect the fluid is getting too thin under the heat causing these problems. but seeing as It detected an electrical issue too I will need to look into that as well. does anyone have any advice on these codes?

Yes. If you'd read them with DiCE you'll have more information in your hands.

Other than changing ATF alone I'd suggest to install Magnefine filter and additional ATF cooler.

well, the good news is that I know how to recreate it. +90 f, ~45 miles in traffic and on highway. throw them together and she gets REALLY mad at me. when I get it in I will throw another drive in my laptop and load xp on it then go for a ride. knowing my luck the weather will cool off before then and I will just have to fix it and wait to see if the problem recreates.

Trans coolers. what do you recommend and where would you install it on the car?

I installed small Hayden OC-1401 on 2001 V70, which is well known for its tranny problems. Together with Idemitsu Type-TLS it is naturally healed, no hard kicks or flares at all, no matter what. Just ordered bigger OC-1402 and another box of Idemitsu for my other Volvo, 2005 XC70, since results on V70 are so exciting, and I'm not fully happy with Mobil 3309 in XC70.

I found some fluid that states to meet the Toyota T-IV spec that some have mentioned to be compatible with the AW5 trans for about $5.50/qt. (castrol transmax or something to that tune) What are your thoughts on this? what problems came with the 3309 fluid?

Just found the oc-1402 for $27. Looks like I will order that too. where did you mount yours?

I had miserable 1.5 years of kicks and flares with highly hyped Amsoil ATF until bought 2nd Volvo with slightly burnt OE fluid, but it was shifting quite decently. Put Amsoil in XC70, did adaptation as usual, noticed significantly degraded shifting quality in following days. Next I replaced Amsoil with Mobil 3309 in XC70 and Idemitsu in V70. I was actually ready to bury V70, since tranny was really bad and I didn't want to pay for rebuild or swap. But what a surprise, Idemutsu proved to fit better. There are rumors on the net that Idemitsu is OE supplier for Aisin. May be my both trannies are too old for Amsoil/Mobil, one has 130k on it, the other is close to 100k, making 2k miles every month.

Box of Idemitsu is $78 on ebay, free delivery.

Get a bunch of Magnefine filters too and change them often. New fluid will likely wash old varnish out, it may will clog solenoids and passages. AW55 has built-in filter, which you can't change w/o splitting transmission. You need 3/8" one.

so the filter is pretty much required, where did you mount yours at? I was thinking about putting it where the fluid enters the cooler. (or exits, which ever is best)

The moral of the story must be if it doesn't meet the JWS-3309 spec don't use the fluid.

According to the ATSG service guide for this 'box Toyota don't use the AW55-50/51/SN box in any of their cars so why should we trust a Toyota specced fluid?

This box is fitted to certain Nissan Maxima years, certain Saab 9-3 years & certain GM Saturn. Nissan's fluid for the Maxima is synthetic so can't be a Mobil 3309 copy; they may have developed the fluid in conjunction with one of the fluid companies.

To my knowledge the only aftermarket JWS-3309 compliant fluid which is synthetic and has cured flares and harshness for me after adaptation is Nulon's Multi Vehicle Automatic Transmission Fluid. Two of my vehicles drive so much better on this stuff.

What a shame you can't purchase this product in the USA.

P.S will somebody please tell me what an Idemitsu is?
