Hey guys,
I've been reading forums regarding the VB issues and replacement process and have one question for you. How do you determine if the vehicle needs a VB work or a whole transmission? How would you diagnose it correctly?

So I just got through with this and would like to add a few thoughts.
I put in a whole reconditioned valve body from worldwidespecialityparts.com. We / I decided to buy a "B" code for my 2001 xc70, turned out wrong and we swapped it for the "A". At all times the gentleman Matthew was responsive, pleasant and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend.
I used the procedure from the PDF linked in this thread and precopsters variations on leaving the cooler lines connected to the radiator so that I didn't have to source the green clips. I took it apart with the radiator hose still on, but then changed my mind and took it off, IMHO it's quick and easy to drain the coolant and move the hose.
I also bought the gasket which is probably easier that using gasket goop, however I used some goop on it too.
The good news is that the car seems way better straight of the bat, it might still have a tiny clunk, or maybe perfect and I'm just hyper vigilant about it, also the car was old when I got it so I don't know what perfect is for one of these. But I have way less clunks and bangs. My worst symptom was going from R - D, there was a delay and big bang. That is now instant and quiet.
Neither my dealer or local independent specialist want to have anything to do with this issue. So I haven't taken it for any software or adaptations etc, nor did I do a full flush, just put in 4qts of new fluid to replace what came out. I don't know if really should or not, it seems fine to me, my local dealer can suck it, I am petty and will never go there, ever.
Most importantly, thanks to everyone who has contributed, you have collectively delayed this cars date with the junkyard for a while longer.

Anyone have a good source/link for solenoids? I have a 2001 V70 XC that I'm thinking about replacing the solenoids, before I get any more drastic.

I rebuilt mine with the Transgo valve body kit with excellent results. I understand Rostra sells new linear solenoids for a reasonable price. Personally, I would do the Transgo kit again. Once you have the VB off it only takes a couple hours to do all the work.

Thanks, but I'm not looking for a valve body kit, just the solenoids. Doing a google search, I can't find any good source for solenoids (just ebay, etsy, etc).Blacklab467 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 11:21 am I rebuilt mine with the Transgo valve body kit with excellent results. I got my Rostra from Ebay, however there were a ton of fake Rostra out there, not to mention listings with fake images (image of Rostra and ships chinese ones). Had to go really through a lot of seller reviews to find a honest one. Also Chinese refurbs and what not. Can also go with Sonnax and Transgo as mentioned. Try contacting Transgo

I bought a 2001 V70, without knowing about the tranny issues, but now I'm too far into it --head, timing, struts, brakes.
We did a flush of the transmission, reset the counter with VIDA, and it drives and shifts much better, but when it gets hot it goes into limp mode with a code of TCM-0114. Am I on the right track replacing the solenoids to start with, or should I stick a 2003+ transmission in it?

There have been questions about transmission compatibility but yet to see a definite answer. Even the 2003+ were not bullet proof because the fluid is never replaced.

Supposedly, it's just a matter of swapping over the wiring harness and reversing one of the solenoids.
My S80 has no requirement for fluid replacement, but I did @ 75k and will again every 50-60k.
IMHO Lifetime transmission fluid means shortening the lifetime of the transmission.
