Timing Marks Off

Post by nthnnxn » Sat Mar 12, 2016 5:02 pm

02 V70 T5... Doing a Valve job overhaul and almost back together. Please keep in mind I did not use a cam lock tool of any kind.....
VVT is on exhaust Crankshaft. I loosened the set screws on the pulley (to install cam cover) and when tightening them back to "factory settings", and the pulley mark aligns with timing cover notch (scratch on top of cover represents timing cover mark), the notches on back of cam do not align flush with the cam cover/head seam.

Also, when the "top side" of the notch on the back of the cam is flush with the cam cover/head seam, and the set screws are "factory settings" the notch is like 2 teeth off (toward the cabin) from notch on cam cover.

Thanks for the look and help!

The vet hub is spring loaded. That's why you have to lock the camshaft then turn the center of the hub to tighten the spring then put your timing belt on. I think it's 18 teeth on the belt between the timing marks.

Thanks for the reply i suppose this is what the "camshaft locking tool" is for? Is there s way to do it without the tool?

You can get someone to hold the exhaust cam marks straight across with a large screw driver or a drag link socket while you rotate the center of the vvt hub clockwise. I think its a t50 torx to turn the hub.

If I remember correctly, the CVVT hub is supposed to be torqued to like 80 ft lbs. You can change timing belts, etc. without the tool, but I am not sure you are going to be able to get it that tight without the tool - or at least a homemade version.

You shouldn't have to move the hub if all you did was loosen the three bolts on the cam gear. It looks like you're only off 1 or two teeth.
