2001 V70 T5 Sunroof bolt won't tighten

Post by Gymbo » Fri Jul 08, 2016 11:57 am

I noticed the passenger-rear side of my sunroof looked low so I took a T25 with me out the door this morning on my way to work figuring I just needed to snug up the rear adjusting bolt and it won't tighten like the threads are stripped. The sunroof operates just fine, but I've had a bit more wind noise and noticed it being low.

I just got to work and haven't torn into it, but I am wondering looking at the parts diagram if I will most likely need will need a new "rail guide" Volvo p/n 30614999?

And where is the best place to buy OEM Volvo parts online?

Thanks!

I would not buy a new rail guide for this- take a look at it, it's possibly missing a nut on the other side or the bolt is just missing the hole to which it tightens to...Without looking at it myself, I can't tell you but this does not seem like a typical issue (first I've read of such) but I would think the repair is going to be fairly simple. Please keep us posted as to what the issue is. Post back and we'll try to find the rail guide for you if you truly need one, but it's going to most likely cost a pretty penny unless you can source one off of a junked V70 (2001-2007) or possibly an S60 from the same model years.

I will tear into it when I get home after work and take some photos.. The best price I've found online for the part "Rail guide 30614999" is $136.

I forgot to take my camera out to the garage. When I removed the sunroof bolt in question there was what looked like a super fine spring....which I am assuming are the threads from the side rail that is stripped. Once the sunroof is removed, the bolt will tighten and bottom out. So in the short term I am either going to try to source a slightly longer bolt and see if that will work or will try to tap it with a slightly larger thread...may as well try, it's already stripped.

I got the car last September from a friend, who kept it good running order, but he wasn't very mechanical and didn't care about the cosmetics of the car. A good polishing fixes most of that, but I've had to replace a lot of small fasteners and trim clips that were missing. I really can't complain though...I got the car for free and apart from fiddly stuff like this and needing to replace the J-hose, it's been fantastic.

Well, a longer screw did the trick. I went to a locally owned hardware store that stocks lots of fasteners and they had a slightly longer pan-head screw and I added a rubber washer and it seems to have done the trick. It snugged up nicely and the sunroof is now almost flush with the roof again like the driver's side and that will work for now!

I'd like to "me too" this. The M5-12 hex screw with steel washer did the trick. The reason this works is because the OEM screw tapers toward the tip, so it doesn't strip the deeper threads out as badly. You still need to tighten gently (you can't torque to spec!) and do use blue threadlocker.

Both of my rear screws stripped out at 5NM of torque on a calibrated torque wrench. I'd go 4NM with blue threadlocker on the OEM screws, but you'll need to use less than that if you use the M5-12. The front screws did torque up okay (but it felt close.)

This was on a 2007 S60.

I also stressed when tightening these bolts. Indeed, no need to force on them, just to get then 'snug'. These are used to align the glass surface with the roof surface
