2007 XC70

Post by mydamnvolvo » Mon Jul 25, 2016 9:03 am

Hi everyone! I come to you today to ask a question. My mother's 2000 Dodge Durango's engine seized yesterday, and she needs a car. Near my home, there is a 2007 XC70 for sale. It has 101k miles and most service records recorded in the manual. She is asking 7000 for it. Is this a good choice? Thanks!

I just shopped for, and subsequently purchased last month, a 2006 XC70 with 133K miles on it and I also live in NY. I purchased the car for $4,800, but it needed a bit of work, which turned out to be roughly $700. So if the previous owner had the work done, I would probably have paid him $5,500, but I got it cheaper because of the needed repairs. Like the one you are looking at, I also was given all the service history on the car.

I paid $2,200 less than the one you are looking at, however, yours is a year newer, has 32K less miles on it, and you did not mention it needs any work, so I'll assume it is in good shape. In my opinion, having recently bought an XC70 in the same area as you, I would feel more comfortable around $6500. You won't be getting ripped of at 7K, but I think a bit lower price would be a bit fairer. Remember that the car will need a timing belt soon. The car I purchased just had it done for a cost of $675. I hope this helps somewhat.

Depends, as above, service records is one thing, repairs done is another one.

100K the timing belt will be due soon. Fortunately, the water pump doesn't need replaced, and the belt kit is quite easy to install.

Look for all repairs, particularly control arms and strut components, if these have been replaced with original Volvo parts, it might be a good buy, if these weren't replaced, add that to the price, if these were replaced with inexpensive aftermarket parts, it might not be a good buy.

With Volvo, you may or may no have very expensive repairs, you surely need an independent, knowledgeable and honest mechanic nearby.

I paid 12k for my 2005 with 83k, that car has cost me nothing other than a headlight bulb.

i think that's a decent price. The P2 cars are a big step up from the P80s in interior quality.

2007 timing belt isn't due for another 20k or 2019

Those 32k miles are worth 3200 bucks for DIY, more like 6k if you pay for repairs

7K is fine, just have a PPI check performed using a competent VOLVO mechanic

Ok, so, sticker under hood saying that timing belt was changed at 76k miles. And that may be why it is a little more than most. I brought my jack and a flashlight to look under and in the car. Everything looks good. I asked her to go to 6500, and they countered at 6800 and a full tank of gas. I think I am going to buy it. Thoughts?

How does it drive? Noises, smells and ride feel are huge. And any visual stuff like fluid levels, and smoking from exhaust on cold startup / when engine is warm.

Powersearch will help dig up info buried here. Also, MVS's Volvo Buyer's Guide will give you a (large) list of things to look for in a P2.

With the timing belt done, and it seems from your inspection, the car is in good shape and doesn't need anything. In my opinion, having just shopped for this car in the same geographical area as you, I'd say 6800 is a fair deal, perhaps even slightly in your favor.

Don't you listen?
A very good deal. Make a deal, give her a $1000 (substantial) deposit and then HAVE IT LOOKED OVER BY A VOLVO MECHANIC
I cannot stress this enough.

If you still refuse to do this, then make sure the test drive is at least 45 minutes.
IF.. it has a transmission that may be starting to fail, the clunks and poor shifting does not show up for over 30 minutes (or until driven for MANY miles)
