Air Conditioning Problems

Post by mick_jenkins » Tue Aug 02, 2016 2:35 pm

My S60 has been an absolute beast for the past couple of years but i now have one problem. The air conditioning wouldn't turn on!! After the car warmed up or my speed increased i was able to get the blower to come on. The blower comes on but not to full speed. Now i have done a little research and i think it maybe the regulator or the blower or possibly the switch. Is this a common issue with the P2s? Can this job wait a few months or will it end up hurting other components? Having changed the breather box(i forget the exact term in the vacuum line) a couple of years ago i feel that i can tackle this issue.

Thank you for your help,

Mick

If you turn the fan control and don't get more air flow it's usually the blower motor. It's a tougher job than the earlier cars, maybe a 2.5 Rating on the MVS mechanic scale, http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=77006

the blower is still affected by the fan control but will not blow as hard as it did a few weeks ago. i will check out the scale right now.

I don't understand well, does the a/c button turn green when depressed? Is the a/c working at all?

Separately, the blower will sometimes burn the regulator, and also the motor will get seized because of rusted bearings. I'd pull the blower and check by hand if it turns easily, if it does I'd look into the regulator.

Before blaming the blower or a blower bearing, one could also possibly have:

1) A bad resistor pack for the fan motor (this is a good "junkyard part" opportunity if you are patient about pulling your own parts at the scrapyard).

2) A corroded or bad fan speed knob rheostat, the first approach being to disassemble the knob control panel from the CCM, and spray it with an electrical contact cleaner, such as DeOxit.

3) VIDA may help - there may be error codes that might give you a clue here.

everything is now functional except when the blower is on full blast it sounds a little louder than usual and doesn't blow as hard as it did in the past. Only a couple of times did it fail to come on and i had to increase my speed to get the blower going. So i assume that the blower may be on its last leg. I will pull out the blower and look at it, its so hot here i was waiting until it cooled down before i had to do it. Has anyone had any experience with after-market blowers, if so how was your experience?

Thank you,
Mick
