Volvo 2005 S60 - Difficulty Starting (Unknown Part Needs Identification)

Post by vorbosh » Thu Aug 11, 2016 5:53 pm

I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue I have starting the car. The problem seems to be worse after the car has been sitting for a while especially when its hot outside.

Please ignore the (Unknown part needs Identification) in the title. I've replaced the brake booster vacuum switch. 5 coils and the fuel rail pressure sensor to no avail. No codes are popping up.

You need to confirm the fuel pressure at the rail at this point. Either a cheap tire pressure gauge or borrow a fuel pressure gauge from a parts store.

Volvos aren't the kind of cars to shotgun random parts at to diagnose, unless you have deep pockets and no dependents. ;)
Air, Fuel, Spark... start simple. Other than an internal mechanical failure (which would be usually heard), these are the places to always begin with. Spark and fuel are easiest and first places to start on a modern engine due to the air intake system having multiple failure points to investigate. You might be able to rent a fuel pressure kit from an auto parts store. If you weren't in Texas and over a 24hr straight ride away, I'd offer my MacTools Master Fuel Injection Test Kit (although it also does mechanical diaphragm pumps). I spent serious coin on the kit and should have just looked for someone who rented or had such a kit. Was young(er), single and dumb.
