Lost Key, doors lock

Post by Faust »

2004 V70 Monday I lost the key to the car. Late in the afternoon getting in the car, expecting the key to be in the ignition I got in the car with no problem. Later I made another search of the interior, no problem. Yesterday, I decided to make another search and found the car locked. As far as I know, these cars do not automatically lock themselves. Is someone having a time with me?

The key has not turned up. I only expected to find it in the car because it wasn't in my pocket. What are my alternatives, I assume a dealer. Do I have to get the car there, or are there any codes, or numbers.

Ive heard my P2 self lock before. Im not quite sure what the sequence was. I got it with one key, and PDQ went to my indie and had three more made. (less than helpful, sorry)

Talked to dealer, new key $195. This is without the fob. They weren't terribly helpful, do I lose any functionality other than remote lock? With fob and chip, $378.

Retail
I can get a complete switchblade cut and programmed (2 softwares) for about $240 or so

You can break into these cars pretty easily using one of the inflatable "ballons" in the door jamb that locksmiths use, then pull up the lock

JRL,

Thanks, but I can get into the car easily. The rear hatch wires are frayed, soit never locks. I also have the dash message "rear hatch open".

My real interest is price. They key was lost somewhere in my barn or house. I fully expect it to turn up, probably immediately after I buy a new key. So, my tendency is to buy the dealer key at $195, just want to be sure that there aren't any problems they are not telling me about. The local Volvo indie has recommended a locksmith who can laser cut a key. Fine, if a key will operate the car without a chip.

I bought my fob key from myswedishparts. They will even cut it for you if you send them your VIN. The key will work in locks but you will not be able to start the car with it. You need to go to a dealer and they have to program it. The only difference between having remote on your key or not is really only the remote unlocking and locking doors and you only need one software. If you have a fob key you need two software (twice as much $$).

Try to ask how much your dealer charges only for coding the key. I got my fob key done for $100 by dealing directly with a dealer mechanic.

Here is a link for the keys you would need:

The dealer told me, or responded Yes, to "will the $195.00 key operate the car?". By this I meant start and run. I was untrusting of this, and that is why I am here.

Faust,

The $195 key will start the car but a dealer have to see the car. They have to pair the key with your car.

Hope this helps

The dealer has to see the car so it can take a piece of its soul...

Your $195 key will have a chip and will start the car. My indie does them for $40 if you can leave the car for a week

Abscate, Zjevik, thanks.

Just called local dealer, can't get to it until next Tuesday, or Wednesday. Gonna be a long weekend.
