2005 V70NAM56 clutch job( Dual mass new option AUG 2017)  Topic is solved

Post by abscate » Tue Oct 18, 2016 9:40 am

Noticed a slight surging in the hill climbs coming over Berkshires yesterday

This is bad as its a 5 speed!

Sure enough, if I load it in 4th I get clutch slippage

Alldata reports 8 hours for job

Decision now is can I drive it or save it for spring? I can drive the car in a way that there is no slippage, I have to force it. I'll probably do 5000 miles highway between now and Spring.

Thoughts?

European forums have plenty of manual transmissions, it's usually the slave cylinder seal that fails, leaking braking fluid - usually the brake fluid reservoir level also drops. It seems it starts leaking then fails all of a sudden - clutch pedal drops to the floor and won't came back. Some pull the pedal back on with the tip of the feet. Fluid also seems to contaminate the flywheel, adding to the expense. They say it's a pretty awful job.

I'll check and eyeball brake fluid, thanks

Procedure isn't bad, it's what I call stupid work. Certainly not paying 80 bucks an hour for that, this idiot is free

Let me tell you the horror story of NOT replacing the (expensive) flywheel while doing this then having to have to do it all over again in 400 miles!!!!!

I'd change the dual mass flywheel to single mass if possible.

Why would one want to do this?

From what I can gather, it's mostly for cost reasons. Like JRL said, the dual mass flywheel is very expensive.

I will be following this thread very closely since I now own 2 manuals. Maybe it's time to invent the "clutch cable conversion kit"

Cost and weight.

Look up how much it cost just for a dual mass flywheel.

Single mass setup is roughly 1 lb lighter.

Ouch $960 bucks from FCP, on sale. Just for flywheel

Im hoping I just find a worn disc and can replace just that. I will touch base with Jim as it sounds like this didn't work for him - I think I recall this one in an earlier post

But it is my impression that the dual mass clutch has extreme longevity. I have a '98 V70 that has over 200K on the original and it shows no sign of giving up yet.

Given the major surgery required to replace a clutch, I think I might prefer a longer lasting clutch.
