2001 V70XC viscous coupling to permanent 4wd

Hey everybody!
I have a 2001 V70XC with the old pre-haldex system. For some time already I have thought if it is possible to remove the VC from the rear differential and lenghten the cardan shaft so that there is no VC in between. The rebuild itself seems fairly easy and the outcome would be a nice, permanent 4wd. With this idea some questions popped to my head.
1) Has anyone ever done something like this?
2) Are there any dangers involved?
3) Should I know anything more involving the rebuild?

This is an interesting proposition. Trouble would be getting a prop shaft of the perfect length. If that could be done would be a perfect project as these cars have beefy rears and the VC can sometimes cause trouble.

I think it would be a challenge on two accounts; first you would need to couple the propshaft to the rear differential obviously, that may involve another joint or support bearing to prevent vibration, also some fabrication on the coupler.....I cannot recall how the VC ordinarily connects to the diff. The other problem would be that the DEM style electronic logic would be confused if you removed the coupler, I'm sorry but I don't really know what electronic components the 2001 system has so maybe someone else can provide input on this. I know that in my '03 XC the DEM gets input from many sources seemingly unrelated or pertinent to demanding AWD.
How about a simpler option of repairing or rebuilding your AWD? They work extraordinarily well in stock form and parts are readily available.

It also might be easier to weld the viscous coupler together and run the stock unmodified propshaft with all other components installed and present but then.................why not just make the existing AOD AWD functional by fixing it? Unless you want to make a huge project and like doing fabrication and machine work.
