slightly low fluid level in the tranny will do that- make sure it's up to the hot line (dip stick inverted so the "hot" mark is facing up) and measure the fluid while the car is running, after it's run 15-20 mins minimum....and you know about shifting through all the gears, leaving it at each gear for 10 or more seconds and then stopping at P- with engine still running when you measure the level, right? Sorry- not trying to tell you something you probably already know.

If you've done everything above and you're still getting some shift flares, I would drain whatever comes out in the pan, measure it and feed exactly the same amount back in the dip stick tube. Never a bad thing to renew some of the fluid, but then again, the 2001 is notorious for having tranny issues. I hope for you're sake you're not starting to experience what other '01 owners have gone through. Good luck with everything and please report back.
