FYI. Just changed atf using several drain and fills with valvoline max life atf. I noticed slipping with this fluid and finally decided to flush with volvo atf and the slipping stopped almost immediately.
Apparently, max life may have too many friction modifiers and was not suitable for my 2010 volvo s80 t6 with 85k miles

The maxlife doesn't actually say it's a JWS3309 spec oil anywhere as far as I can see. Thus I'm not too surprised if it didn't work as well as the correct oil.

I use Aisin Type T-IV. I replaced the transmission in the 2001 2.4T with a used one at about 120,000 miles. It now has 200,000 miles. I drain and fill about 3.6 quarts every oil change at 5,000 miles to keep it fresh. It shifts great.

I bought a 2005 V70R last summer and have been doing drain and fills with the same fluid 4 times over the last couple of thousand miles. It was having hard shifts when I first bought it but seems to be shifting better. It the been taking 3 quarts each drain and fill.

Please note that EVERYONE refers to "MaxLife" in these threads.

The one I've used without hiccough in four of these (our) transmissions is the "MaxLife Dex/Merc LV".

The Dex/Merc LV is the one you want.

I use Aisin Warner OT4 for all 4 of our Cross County's, Aisin Warner is a large manufacturer of Automatic Transmissions. I believe Aisin Warner transmissions are used on many Volvo models. I also believe that Aisin Warner is the ATF in the Toyota Type IV bottles, regardless it has worked well for my Volvo's.

FCP alleges in their description that Idemitsu is the supplier to Volvo and that the type TLS is the Volvo OE fluid. I will be using it this week.
