Front rotors - What to do with those ones?

Post by Metallo »

Hi guys,

I am busy replacing multiple parts on my latest purchase, an XC70 2005.

I found these front rotors, I was unable to understand who manufactured them but I need your opinion on what to do, basically either throw them away or replace them?
They are still within min. thickness, 26.00mm but I am concerned to see so much rust.

By the way, I will put on new ceramic pads:

As always, your opinion is much appreciated.

Thank you!

Never seen that pattern before. Based on the rust, easier to replace them then cut them.

Your choice of pads is good.

Good luck.

Those are slotted rotors, not uncommon.

Rust is normal.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Hi,

rust is normal, but I have never seen the coating peeling off like this, that's why I am concerned to put them back on.

On close up these discs are pretty knackered.

Sorry can't identify for you. It appears that where the slots were machined material has loosened and scored the disc. Nothing wrong with standard discs for your vehicle. Textar discs are the non Genuine choice of repairers over here; not certain if they're available over there. You certainly have Zimmerman and Brembo which are well known. Others may want to chime in on what has worked well....

I installed the same Akebono ceramic pads you selected and mated them with Brembo rotors 45K miles ago on my 2001 V70 T5. I've been really happy with the combination. Braking is strong, pad and rotor wear has been minimal, and there is virtually no brake dust.

That line of rust is not normal wear, it shouldn't be there. I'd replace the rotors but I'd first inspect the calipers work properly.

The rust chunks in the machined slot fall off and get stuck between the pad and rotor. This is common with slotted rotors. I would stay away from slotted rotors unless you remove wheels and wire brush the slots every few miles.

agree with precopster - there's no compelling technical reason to use slotted or cross-drilled rotors, and those rotors are knackered and need replacement.
If you want slotted for aesthetics that's one thing, but they will not make your car "stop faster".

I've had success with Bosch rotors, and those are cheap and readily available in N.A.

IMHO no point in using any "performance" rotors and pads unless single piston brake calipers are upgraded. EBC RedStuff 3000 actually were stopping the car few times worse.

Also brake booster in P2 is weak, I know folks who installed V50 booster with very positive outcome.

I stick with OE rotors/pads (made by ATE, I think).
