DIM Failure? 2009 S60 2.5T ABS & Brake Failure Stop Safely.... BCM CEM BPP code

Post by Soloracer » Thu Aug 17, 2017 1:47 pm

I have a 2009 S60 2.5T with only 116k.

Monday the instrument cluster went nuts. The “DTSC off” + “Brake Failure Stop Safely” + “Engine System Service Required” were in the message screen area. The traction triangle, brake, ABS, Red Triangle in the center of the instrument cluster were illuminated. The odometer did not work nor did either of the trip odometers. The Speedometer, Tach, Temp and Fuel Gauges functioned. The cruise control does not work either.

I cleaned a few fuses and switched the battery with my 2003 V70. The issue was resolved for 3 days. Today, the instrument cluster went nuts again.

Is this a DIM failure?
I recall that after 2005, DIM failures are rare.

I had a DIM failure on my 2003 V70 which had much different symptoms.

Thanks for the help!

Erik

UPDATE:
I unplugged the DIM to remove it so I could easily take a picture of the sticker information to search for a used unit.
After plugging it back in and reinstalling the trim, the instrument cluster still was the same. 2 hours later when I went to use the car, the instrument cluster was back to normal.
I used the 2003 V70 code reader and there were no codes. The code reader would not read the ABS System though.

Went back and took a short drive. Upon a minute after startup, the instrument cluster went nuts agin.

Thoughts?

Same problem on my 2004 V70. Maybe a CEM or DIM issue. Trying to find a troubleshooting guide for the electrical system to check for shorts, ground, etc., in the system.

We don't hear much on later 2008-2009 production, so I will just be guessing here. Did it rain lately? Could be water getting on the CEM.

You don't mention it, does the engine/transmission still work fine when this happens?

Other hint would be a failed fuse on the CEM module (those black square box fuses). The ABS electronic module may be problematic in later years, but can't see how it correlates with the cruise control and DIM not working. Also, a very wide guess, transmission speed sensor?

Thank you for the reply.

We have had a lot of rain and the humidity is terrible - 97% nearly all the time lately.
How can the CEM get wet? I thought it is up under the dash inside the car above the dead pedal?

Where is the transmission speed sensor?
The engine was powerwashed before we purchased it at a used car lot and I was having a few CEL issues. I erased the codes but one I recall as an engine speed sensor (Code 5000), is this the same as a transmission speed sensor? Since that time I have not had a CEL issue since.

The car runs fine and shifts fine. There is no change to the drive ability when the instrument cluster goes nuts. The alarm and door locks work fine too.

Thanks

I removed the lower dash cover and checked the power to fuse #15 with the engine running. I have power to both sides of the fuse which makes me think the CEM is good. I plan to access the top two plugs and confirm the smaller one is not corroded which appears to be a 30 minute task start to finish.

I pulled the code using my 2003 V70 reader and a Brake Pedal Position Sensor Signal Missing - 900B - was displayed.
Will that one signal cause all these issues?

If it's anything like the P2s, a bad brake pedal positon sensor affects more than you might think. The CEM/ABS/Traction control systems can't do their job properly if they don't know when or if/how much you're depressing the brake pedal. On my '06 S60 cruise control would not engage when the pedal position sensor went out, and I remember reading somewhere that the ABS and DTSC (if equipped) will operate in a sort of failsafe mode as well.

Brake pedal position sensor DTC along with the cruise not working would be enough for me. It would appear as though Volvo decided on the newer ones to display warnings for other affected systems to let you know that these can't perform their functions properly until it sees a good position sensor.

I have an 03 V70. I will swap the two sensors and see if the problem goes away. According to an on-line retailer, both cars have the same replacement part number.
