Transmission slips into neutral with brake applied - P0013 p1332

Post by volvoguy17 » Mon Aug 21, 2017 3:26 pm

So i recently purchased my 2001 V70 2.4t from an auction with 129000 miles. The timing belt and water pump was replaced 9000 miles ago. The car drives and shifts great except for when i am at a stop it will pop out of drive with my foot on the brakes. I tested this by leaving the car on a slight incline (so much so that i wouldnt roll into the house or street when i took my foot off the brake in drive) and noticed no fluctuation or popping out of drive to neutral. HOWEVER, the second i push the brake the car starts to idle irraticaly and i release the brake only to roll back half a foot before i pop into drive. The car will not pop out of gear if i lower the automatic transmission all the way to the L selection (1st gear) or in Reverse. In 3,4 or D it will do this annoying popping out of gear with foot on the brake.

I replaced the camshaft position sensor which is what both codes lead me to. I also cleaned the VVT valve and/or the camshaft reset valve (which both codes also allude to) with no results.

Through my search in the interweb, the park neutral switch is a potential suspect of an issue like this. However, when i have my gf sit in the seat to put it in and out of drive, whenever the car pops out of drive, the pnp level/gear does not move.

The transmission fluid level is perfect but could be replaced. It is not black but is not pink either.

The Volvo dealer when they do a transmission flush tend to re-flash the transmission ecu. Could this be a simple flush and re-flash ecu? Am i looking at a new PNP sensor/lever. Vacuum leak?

To me it seems likes something is not responding electrically.

Thanks in advance!

It still has the destructive, original, transmission software!!!
Go to your dealer and get the latest software download, problem solved.

Agree with JRL, get that TCM flashed to latest firmware as soon as possible. Should be about $125.

Is my symptom typical of a reflash fix? The reasons I want to be very careful is if I can avoid taking it to the dealer until I am 80% sure it needs a reflash, that would be ideal! I called 6 different Volvo dealers and a number of service shops in town. One service shop said that transmission fluid could be leaking past the valve body, creating the popping out of gear in drive. But is his analysis flawed? Because wouldn't the transmission "pop" into neutral and have an erratic idle in reverse with my foot on the brake as well????

You need to go to Volvo only for this. The 2001 model year had a neutral stop feature that destroyed transmissions, and was removed in 2002. Software upgrades to the 2001 removed it from the 2001s. I believe it was free for owners but usually you get 10 years to get these things done, do expect a couple of hours of labor costs.

This is a bad car to buy at auction, sending you good luck vibes

Yeah, you should have done your research.
NEVER buy a 2001 or a 2002 S60, S80 or V70 but especially a 2001!

Another viewpoint here.
I know JRL knows his Volvo's, but respectfully disagree with his comment about 2001's. I've owed my 2001 V70 T5 for 16 years and am very happy with it. Mine is a 5 speed and if you did your research, you'd know that the 01 and 02 auto's had a bunch of issues. My 2001 has the same "Volvo" issues that most of us have experienced. I like it better than my older 95 850 Turbo wagon and think that if yours only has 129k, you are doing pretty good. Get the TCM reflashed, do the standard maintenance, and I bet you have many years of pleasurable driving. Good luck and happy driving.

Thats because you took care of it and maintained it. Most of the cars at auction or at private sale are getting sold for a reason, and thats usually a death song in the 2001-2 transmission.

Jim has posted before - don't buy a 2001 unless it drives perfect.

I like my P2 more than my P80, except for the seat and the turbo.

The Volvo was clean enough that I figured if need be I would replace the transmission (since I knew nothing else was wrong with it and i got it for cheap). A friend of mine has a lift in his garage and it would just be a case of beer! Now I will make an appointment for this upcoming week and will report back once I know if the re-flash solves my problem. Thanks!
