Volvo Repair Database 2005 Volvo s60 2.5T AWD AC Compressor Bypass Belt

Post by Brought Upright » Thu Aug 31, 2017 5:59 pm

If you're stuck with a seized AC compressor & want to bypass it with a shorter belt a $15 Bando 6PK1300 belt or equivalent* gets you back on the road in a few minutes. No need to remove your seized or noisy, about-to-seize AC clutch/compressor or waste time & $ on a Compressor Bypass Pulley so this is a good belt to keep as a spare for an emergency.

This is a 20mm/13/16" wide x 1300mm/51.18" long, single-sided, 6 rib, micro-groove belt so the flat back runs over the idler/tensioner pulley. To install, position the power steering fluid reservoir back out of the way, get the belt in the grooves of the crankshaft & alternator pulleys & over the idler pulley (a 2-3' stick/rod can help position belt) then rotate/stretch belt by hand onto the power steering pulley or loosen tensioner with torx tool.

Not sure which other models this belt will fit but it sure works well on a 2005 Volvo s60 2.5T AWD.

Looking on the Volvo Lisle site it looks like the year break for the serpentine belt is

-1999 Volvo part 9458469

2000- Volvo part 30731808

Jason to answer yours.....belt goes on around bottom of crank, up and around alternator pulley, now around and under tensioner, up to front of power steering pulley, over PS pulley and back to top of crank.

How is that possible with the alternator running backwards? Clutch pulley...

The electrical part of the alternator doesn’t mind which way it turns but if the alternator has s freewheeling pulley , you will not get charging running it backwards

My 99 has such a pulley and I think most P2 Volvo’s do, too

So does this work ? The alternator pulley being with clutch, it seems it can't run backwards.

I can't find a single reference on internet with a picture of this belt installed or a video showing it working ?

You might use a bypass belt short term to get from a break down to home or repair shop, but ultimately, the car needs a functional alternator. You will need to fix the seized AC unit or alternator, or a seized clutch pulley!

I'm sorry but I don't see how this is being "smart" or proactive. If you are buying one of the recommended belts, then you already suspect you have an issue. I know AC units and alternators aren't cheap, but replacement clutch pulleys are less than $40. Why put yourself in that position of having to install a short belt on the road after a breakdown?

Couldn't help but notice the OP posted once with this solution and hasn't been back. Wonder how many trips he made before he fixed his alternator properly?

I think the belt idea is meant only for a seized/out of work A/C compressor. I understand it may be a costly repair if the compressor has failed with some people didn't feel like spending if they don't keep the car for long.

But I doubt it can be done on P2 cars. There are only two ways to bypass the A/C pulley, and neither of these allows the belt to wrap enough around the alternator pulley to provide a good enough grip on this alternator pulley. If the belt doesn't wrap enough over the alternator pulley, it will slip because the alternator rotor is heavy and has a high inertia: the car will have charging issues. Notice that the original system has the belt wrapped over almost the entire surface of the alternator pulley, to ensure a good grip on it.

Yeah, I missed the AC compressor focus initially (my bad).

Nice attachments to visualize how this might actually work, but...

Att. #1 would most likely not have enough "grab" to turn the alternator...

Att. #2 would spin the alternator in the opposite direction that it is designed to function...

Att. 3 works as designed...but you need a "non seized" AC compressor, alternator, PS pump, and tensioner.

A seized compressor shouldn't be an issue as long as the free wheel is working. Disconnect the power to the magnetic coupling and the compressor will be never have to move again if you don't want it to.
