I would rather take my car to a place that has the word Volvo in its name than Joe's garage.

If only i could afford to pay mechanics. !

Check their labor rate. In my experience specialized services often charge as much as the dealer does.

What do you want to repair?

Indeed. But, the independent is getting your dollar, rather than the guy who owns the dealership who pays a tech to learn to work on your car. Moreover, an indie will work with you on finding used parts, a shortcut like the ziptie fix, and the like.

Ask them what exactly they want to put into your car. Some aftermarket is quite decent in fact (Lesjofors...)

Well that's part of it. They're charging basically the same $/hour as everyone else, but claim they have a car in for a spring like once a week and so they're quoting ~2h labor whereas other shops quote 3-4h.
Hm, interesting, 1h is what I spent on the rear spring without a lift :) With lift it would be like 30 minutes, I just could not find a way how to do it without removing the front stay, which is at least half of the labor.

They're using "Suplex" brand springs, which I'm having trouble getting hard info on. I called FCP and the lady there said overall in her opinion they're a mixed bag, however in the past two years 22 orders have been placed for XC70 rear suplex springs (same part number, each order was a pair) and none were returned. That's not a huge sample size either so I dunno how much it should influence my decision.
That's right, I tossed my Suplex pair that I got from FCP into trash bin - way too soft.

Lesjofors 42 958 42 is what you want, $58 at FCP.
