2008 S60 2.5T Right side keeps getting empty

Post by smashas » Thu Nov 23, 2017 10:14 am

Guys am new to this Volvo. The right side of the fuel tank keeps going empty and the car would shutdown. A new fuel pump assembly have been installed with the same problem. Any theory of operation or assistance is appreciated.

Don't know about Volvo but BMWs have the "siphon pump" issues, i.e., the siphon pump that pumps fuel from L side to R side.

WHen the pump was changed did they change the whole unit that comes with the hoses attached or did they remove the unit and only replace the pump?
DO you know if your car has two pumps or one? I am unusre if Belize would use fuel rail pressure sensor and have two pumps or the other version with one pump.
The usual cause is the strainer cap on LH side is covered with something.

The complete unit with hose was changed. Then there two pumps in the right hand assembly... We see the North American versions.

Also carry the fuel rail pressure sensor.

Troubleshoot to see that the LH pump is powered. It does not run through the PEM like the variable speed pump for the RH side. If it doesn't run on the two pump system then the LH side is not being pumped to RH side.

The ejector pump on the end of the hose in the LH side has to be at the bottom of tank. It has to be attached to the sender unit and held to bottom of tank. The access covers make this easy to check but if it not pulling fuel from th LH side then the fuel can be higher than the bottom of the tank opening and spill fuel inside car. I think from details here that the problem started when the pump was replaced so installation error could be the cause.

I am sure the left side hose is at the bottom of the tank. I more think the pump is shutting off after sometime of driving...So that would lead to a faulty CEM module as I can watch the left side with the car at idle and the level is okay. At some point the left side stops working while driving and when being tested it always work.
