Got an '03 V70 w/ rod knock (almost free).
Pulled the #2 cap and, no surprise, a spun bearing. (Male, teenage driver figured that when the engine knocks it's time to check the oil)(or have their dad check it)
I contacted a large aftermarket parts house that specializes in Volvo parts.
He said that NOBODY rebuilds these engines.
I'm kind old-school (and old) and have rebuilt many engines.
Why would he say that?
I'm sure the crank needs grinding and will need a new rod. My labor is free.
To him, this was the wrong path and he's a parts seller.
I can get a used motor for about $600-$800 locally.
Comments are welcome.
Thanks

Re: Spun Rod Bearing
These engines rarely fail, therefore perhaps no such market for rebuilding them. Plus, the head work is troublesome compared with other engines.
When these fail, it's either from a clogged and neglected PCV that caused sludge in the oil pan and ruined the rod bearings, either from a failed pulley/belt ruining the head.
When this happens usually people will swap the engine because these Volvo engines last forever so a used one is almost always a good bet.

Re: Spun Rod Bearing
There was a video with overview of "failed" Volvo engine, which amused me, but can't find it right now. It "failed" at about 600k miles when the piston rings fully wore out... Everything else was worn as well, because of years and miles, but did not fail.
