Replacing trunk latch on S60 MY03, canbus?

Post by borealis » Sun Jan 07, 2018 11:47 pm

The actuator in my trunk latch has started to act up - it doesn't retract correctly. My original problem was that I wasn't able to close the trunk, the latch wouldn't hook. After reading about the exact same problem here https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/s60-2 ... ixing.html, I removed the latch and hit it with a rubber mallet, after a couple of hits, I could hear the actuator retract, and it's been working on and off since.

A new one is quite expensive, so I've ordered a used one off of Ebay, but I haven't received it yet.

I started wondering, am I going to have any canbus issues with replacing the latch? As in do I need to go in to the dealership in order for the car to accept the new latch? It's the same part number for what it's worth (p/n 8652398).

Thanks!

I think that component is back to analog operation with just a 12V solenoid. I'm replacing my failed 1999 one right now, my used one failed this winter after two years

I think no programming is needed indeed

No programming. The REM is the module that operates it and it is the CAN module. No chip in the latch only a motor and a latch position switch.

My trunk release was inop when I bought this 02 S60. I jumped the gun and ordered a used actuator just assuming mine was bad.

Haven't received the actuator yet. Decided to troubleshoot it today. Found a blown fuse. Replaced the fuse, found that the key fob will actuate the latch but the lid switch will not. Tested the switch with my multimeter, found it to be good. Pulled the main plug and tried to read for voltage, got nothing because the lid has to be shut for the module to energize the circuit.

Plugged everything back up, closed the lid, checked functionality again, found that the lid switch now energizes the latch actuator.

Everything now works properly. Will return the used actuator ($33).
