A/C cold for 10mins then goes warm.

Post by shiloh51933 » Fri May 25, 2018 1:23 pm

2004 XC70 a/c comes out cold for first 10minutes then compressor cuts off. If i turn a/c off at CCU on dash for about 5-10 minutes it will start to work again. Relay is good, I had a/c system refrigerent revovered, evacuated and recharged system. Dye was used to look for leaks but no leaks were found .
This issue actually started last summer but it would happen after a long time driving on a really hot day while idling at a stand still. It has progressed to this since then. I was thinking that it could be the accumulator failing or the orifice tube. But if I knew for sure i wouldn't be in this forum. Has anyone had this happen to them and if so then what did you do to resolve?

If you're absolutely sure the refrigerant is fully charged then it kinda sounds like the evaporator is freezing up. Mine did that due to a faulty evap temp sensor. Is the airflow out of the dash vents slowing down as it becomes warm, and then flowing full force again after you've shut it off for a while? Also, once the airflow turns warm, have you tried turning off the A/C button but leaving the fan on high to see if you can get it running cold again sooner?

Issue in my opinion is as stated on the clutch gap. That was exactly what my car was doing last year. When the outside temp was about high 20's C, it was ok, but as soon as it went over 30C it would run for a while then go warm. Switch it off and leave for a while and the it would do it all over again. Clutch gap was way too wide.

No. Actually I've never changed cabin filter since we've owned this Volvo. I did buy a cabin filter a couple of months ago but I never installed it because I always have something to repair/maintain on my 1998 V70XC(used as business vehicle).

Yes. As it starts to come out less cold then turning warm the airflow is a bit less powerful(I actually checked to see if something behind the glove box had been sucked up against the vent behind glove box, It happened once b4.) Nothing blocked up behind glove box. Yes I tried turning A/C button off while leaving fan running to no avail. My A/C system was hooked up to heavy duty recover, recycle, evacuate and recharge machine. The machine leak test and leak dye was added...no leaks were found.
Do you happen to know where the Evaporator temperature sensor is located on a 2004 XC70?

When the sensor goes bad it usually gets the lines white-frozen in the engine bay but the air is still cold - it just makes the compressor run so much until the evaporator gets covered with ice. So when the issue happens look first at the compressor pulley: if it doesn't turn it's a gap issue. If it turns without stopping for minutes it's a temp sensor issue.

I'm sorry but I didn't quite understand last part of your comment. Are you asking if the compressor is still turning while the air is coming out warm? My compressor stops turning while it's coming out warm.
How big is the gap supposed to be?
