2003 V70 key won't turn past position 0

Post by dj_v70 »

I drove my v70 500 miles for a long weekend vacation. Once there the key won't turn in the ignition. After several hours it finally magically turned, so I immediately drove the car straight home. Sure enough, as soon as I parked it in driveway and removed the key and put it back in again, it won't turn at all.

I have read about all of the volvos that won't turn past 1 and the simple fix regarding removing bottom ignition lock cover plate. I found posts that suggested that this doesn't work for my issue.

There is one post out there by chism that suggests that his issue was the tumblers which he filed down. I want to try this, but I need to remove the lock assembly first.

Shear bolts look nasty, but I am more confused regarding shift lock cable removal. One tutorial suggests key has to be at position 2 to accomplish this ... I can't get to position 2. Any advice??

Try something easy first. Foot on brake, push the shifter while in park forward and then gently try to turn key.

And wiggle the wheel a bit in case the steering lock is contributing.

Crlande/Rattnalle, Thanks for the inputs. I did try all this. I even tried raising the front of the vehicle off the ground which was suggested in another post. None of this works.

You need a new ignition lock. You can get them pre-programmed to fit your keys. I just had the one replaced on my 01 V70.

KurtL, Thanks for the reply. I found ignition lock that I want to buy, problem is that I can't get the old one out. Shift lock cable seems to be stuck, I understand that the ignition has to be in position 1 (maybe 2) to remove cable. However, I can't get my ignition out of position 0.

As I recall, the shift lock cable is a quick disconnect afair - not at all difficult. I did have to fidget it a bit to reinstall it. And yes, I think you may need to turn the key to Pos 1 or 2 in order to get it properly plugged back in.

Did my post have a link to a YouTube video showing how the locksmith drilled the holes to release the lock ring. That’ the important part.

Chrism, Thanks for the response. Are you saying that I don't need to have ignition in position 1 or 2 to remove shift lock cable? I was on the impression that that was required. I did see a 'justanswer' response that said that it was required and a locksmith was needed if couldn't get past position 0.

Yes, the video that you linked to showed the locksmith drilling four holes to release the lock ring. However, I need to get the ignition lock out of the car to do that properly. I released the tab for shift lock cable and it pulls about 1/2" and then doesn't go any further. I didn't pull real hard though.

I also tried releasing the cover on the bottom of the ignition lock and removinhg the re-locker pin. Neither helped me, I am still stuck at position 0:(

I don’t think I fully disconnected the cable until after I drilled out the bolts and got the lock assembly loose from the column. Likewise, when reinstalling, attach the cable then mount the lock assy back onto the column.

I’m sorry but it was several months ago when I did it so the details are foggy.

When mine failed it came on slowly and was worse in hot weather so I was able to still turn the key when I disassembled it. Maybe if you get the lock assy lose you can shake it around enough to get the key to turn????? It might help loosen the fingers inside if you spray a bunch of electronics cleaner, or the like, as far down the key hole as you can.
