P2 ATF drain-and-fill Trans empty and fill question

Post by AlanS » Mon Jul 30, 2018 4:18 pm

I own a fluid extractor pump. I used to use this on my cars for the oil changes (Mercedes recommended this for their cars, thus I used it for my old Merc). Since I have the extractor, can it be used for the transmission? I can just go through the dipstick tube. Can I just pump out the old stuff and fill? It would be so much easier than getting under the car, etc. Any thoughts?

I will work, you may remove 2-3 liters at once this way. You'll need to refill then run the engine to mix the fluid, then remove again. There's no actual need to drain it from under the car, imo, that drain removes 3.5L while at the return line you can remove 2.5L

It also works quite nicely by removing the return line at the radiator (see Youtube). If the line seems stuck, use a pry bar like here at 22:35 www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RJyYRQxbZA

Using a set of ramps makes "getting under the car" much easier. It's one hex head drain plug for heaven's sake.
Many people here feel removal of the drain plug allows a faster flow rate which hopefully carries out more muck than sipping slowly through a straw. I'm with them.
Also, I raise the left wheel a bit higher than the right and get close to 4 quarts out.

Pump outs after a drain & fill are best.

I have an extractor pump too, that I used on my old diesel VW. It was not as effective on the Volvo; maybe I didn't get the hose fully down into the dipstick tube.
I did a 'flush and fill' last month and used the extractor first, but also put the car on ramps and drained the tranny from the plug afterward- almost 1/2 liter still drained out. finished the job with the 'gibbons method' which was easy and clean.

Draining the pan will probably be more effective when it comes to flushing out any stuff that might be lying around the bottom since it can just flow out with the oilm

Just do a full/proper drain/fill/flush and be done with it...easy and satisfying.
