XC70 Dies while driving and other problems

Post by james166 » Sun Aug 12, 2018 5:18 pm

Subject car is an 2005 XC70 with 137,000 miles. Car "died" while driving, and appeared to have a complete electrical failure. Car was restarted a few minutes later and ran without problems. Has also been run several times since without issue. However, inspection of the car revealed the following problems.
1) Codes P0132 and P2231 (oxygen sensor) were stored in the ECU.
2) Car was found to be low on oil. Four quarts were needed to get back to normal level.
3) Battery voltage was 13.8v when running, 12.6 when off.
4) "Glove test" on oil filler port while car was idling showed no suction but also did not inflate glove.
5) No major oil leaks were observed. There was an oil stain on the lower radiator (?) hose. (See attached picture).
Any ideas on what could have cause the car to stop running? Also where could the oil leak be? Could it be burning oil at only 137K miles?

If it was missing 4 quarts of oil listen for engine noises. 4qts is a lot unless the mechanic overfilled.

The pcv should have been done by now. It is a major cause of oil consumption and/or engine seal failure and sudden loss of oil. Regardless the glove test, the pcv must be replaced around 100k.

Some turbo parts can also cause oil consumption.

The battery & alternator are fine

Possibly what caused the stall is some elctrical thing such as the DEM (AWD)

That’s a turbo air induction hose. I think. It could be a little PS fluid seep.

4 quarts low is really bad. You’ve won a99:1 odd bet if the engine wasn’t damaged by this. Pulling for ya....

Well, I got a little more info on this. A previous repair was done around 130K for oil leaks, replacing camshaft seals and the crankshaft seal, along with the seal on the filler cap. The oil level was checked shortly after that but then it was assumed everything was good so it was not checked. So that means it lost 4 quarts in 7K miles. Maybe that's not such a high rate of loss, but definitely very bad for the engine to get so low! I told the owners to monitor the oil level more often and look for a smoking tailpipe. And maybe start looking at used car ads?....

So the PCV was clogged badly at that point causing those seals to leak, I'm guessing, most surely the PCV was also done at that moment. But again, as above I think these 2.5t use some 6qts with dipstick at max, so the engine run for a while with only 2qts...
