[2001 V70 2.4T] Oil leak, intake side, lower engine / oil pan

Post by prwood » Sat Aug 25, 2018 5:57 pm

It's another oil leak! Hooray!

I noticed oil was starting to pool up on the driveway again, and the entire bottom of the oil pan was coated with oil. I cleaned up the oil pan and then started the engine and let it idle in the driveway for about half an hour. No signs of oil. Then I took it out for a 10 minute drive with a couple of turbo boosts. Pulled back in to the driveway onto the ramps and found this:
IMG_8121 (1).jpg
Slightly different angle where you can see up the side of the oil pan a bit:
IMG_8127 (1).jpg
I can't see the exact point of origin of the leak, because I believe the actual leak condition only occurs during the drive. However, I can definitely see excess oil coming down the intake side of the oil pan and then flowing across the bottom and dripping from the exhaust side of the oil pan under the oil cooler and drain plug. There's a lot of crud built up on the intake side of the oil pan which you can see from the second picture above.

Everything on the exhaust side is clean, turbo on down to the bottom edge of the oil pan. No oil coming from the turbo or turbo oil drain pipe. No oil on or near the oil filter. The top side of the engine also looks clean on both the intake and exhaust side. Front end of the engine looks good, no signs of oil. There's no oil anywhere near the rear of the engine or anything on the transmission, nothing in the rear main seal area.

In the past year I have worked on addressing other oil leaks. I completely replaced the PCV system, intake and exhaust camshaft oil seals, oil cap gasket, as well as the oil seals on the turbo oil drain, and have also re-sealed the camshaft cover and replaced the spark plug tube seals.

My current theory is that the oil pan gasket has weakened and that oil is being pushed out when the engine is under high load, which is why it didn't show up when I was idling.

Any thoughts?

I would go with some part of the PCV system has cracked with that level of leak, prw.

An oil pan gasket is just going to seep first. Thats a full fledged Volvo Valdez

Stick your smartphone up there and take some pics, looks like its located near the turbo oil drain pipe.

Isn’t that in left side of engine , front of car?

Turbo stuff is on right side of engine, rear of car

Yeah, it's not the turbo drain pipe, that's in the rear of the car. Clean back there. I think abscate is probably right about the PCV system, the positioning seems about right. I'm going to try and find a photo from when I did the PCV job to see if I can compare positions.

It seems that #1 in this photo is directly over where the leak emerges at the front edge of the oil pan. Both are right in the center. It could also be #2, but that one is more off to the side.

Compare this:

Let’s find a picture of the engine stripped down showing those six divots in the pan, divots three and four spouting Texas Tea. Noting five and six have oil above the too. Crap, I hope that isn’t cylinder head.

This page has photos of a B5244T3 engine stripped down:

I pulled them off for posterity here. The images are kind of small but we might get some detail by zooming in:

I marked up the front photo into a diagram:

- Red lines for the areas where oil was spotted hitting the bottom of the oil pan
- Blue lines to show mating surfaces between the oil pan, bottom and top engine block, cylinder head, and cam cover
- Green circles to show PCV system connecting points
- Yellow lines to trace upwards from where oil leaks emerged. The middle two indicate the boundaries of the wider leak in the middle.

Another question to consider is whether each leak spot on the oil pan corresponds to a separate leak that traveled straight down, or if a single leak could have spread out and caused all of the leak spots.
