[2001 V70 2.4T] Repairing fresh air hose from MAF to Turbo, Volvo part 30680446

Post by prwood »

Recently I broke off the turbo vacuum hose connection from my fresh air intake hose. This is the skinnier of the two fittings that are on either side of the big PTC fitting at the bottom elbow of the hose:

The connection broke off flush with the surface, so there is now a small hole roughly the same diameter as the inside of the vacuum hose. Right now I have it taped off and the TCV disconnected and the car is running fine, just with no turbo.

The cheapest I have seen a used one is about $60 plus shipping, and new is $100+.

Rather than pay for the whole part, I am thinking I might be able to repair it. It seems like I ought to be able to buy a replacement fitting that I could screw/cement into the hole so as to provide a new fitting for the turbo hose. It seems like the plumbing or HVAC worlds ought to have this sort of thing available... I found this, which sort of seems in the right direction, but I'm not sure if it's acceptable for this application:

Anyone have a better idea where to look for such a thing?

The part number for this hose is 30680446, and it is used on the following models:

Is there enough meat in the piece to thread and epoxy the fitting into?

That link is to a nylon piece - I'd research your materials and compatibility and what epoxies actually work. A metal piece could be threaded with sealant if there's enough depth to tap.

The plastic of the fresh air hose is quite thin... I'd guess 1/16" or maybe a hair thicker. There is a bit more meat around the stub of the connector itself, but still not very much. Either way it doesn't seem like enough to thread something onto it...

Just drill a small hole in it and JB weld a brass barb fitting into the hold, build up a wall around it to give it strength

You could even get a barbed fitting with a nut on the back

You do need a good clamp on the blue hose as it has in unused boost pressure

Perhaps one of these plus JB Weld? I think 1/8" is about the inside diameter of the hose and I would just need to drill a 1/4" hole at the site of the current hole.

That would work but it does look like a pipe thread on the left side. A straight thread with a nut would be a bit cleaner yo install.

I just purchased a new tube for my wife's 2004 xc70. Hers broke off at the turbo flange.
I bought if from fcpeuro for around $100, I'd rather not worry about than rigg it up.

Ignorant question: what type of plastic are these air pipes made from?

From my stunted tactile long term memory, the slight greasy feel of the plastic (not counting the oil residue) I will go with polypropylene....labelled TRIANGLE 5 or maybe still PP from the early 2000s?

Thats my final answer, and I bet Fenway on it.

..and yes...JB Weld will stick to it AFTER you clean oil off with acetone, MEK, hexanes, or like.
